Very helpful book on instruction and photography!,
By T. Merrill (Omaha NE) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Canon EOS Digital Cameras (Paperback)
I found this book to be entirely helpful. It is full of useful information on all of the features for these cameras as well as photography in general. I have taken classes through my local camera store but this book is more helpful and easy to understand. It breaks down information in chapters (obviously) so it is easily referenced. It explains things in a way that you can very easily comprehend...I bought one for a Christmas present for a friend I liked it so much!

Misleading description but good absolute beginner's book,

This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Canon EOS Digital Cameras (Paperback)
This book's description is exaggerated. First of all there is nothing complete about it. Second - I'm still wondering where the up-to-date coverage of the Canon EOS line is, heck I would be satisfied with just coverage. Except for the first nine pages where he makes a list of Canon EOS Models (not even that is complete), in the next chapters there aren't more than a handful of references to the EOS line.
Not taking the misleading description into account, I would say this is a fairly good absolute beginner's book, no matter the camera brand or a let's learn something new in three hours kind of a thing. It takes you through various simple technical explanations of how a DSLR camera works and how to hold it, of lenses and basic concepts like shutter speed, aperture, ISO, DOF, white balance, etc. It gives basic, not detailed advice on compositional techniques, controlling lighting, adjusting exposure, sharpness, saturation, contrast. The book has three chapters on image editing but I would have preferred some 'apply the techniques to your camera and get the images right' chapter , though I understand that you might want to enhance them later. But for a beginner's book I think it aims too high and achieves too little. It also talks a little about filters, tripods, bags. On the plus side, it's nicely organized, with definitions of common terms and tips that really catch the eye, with a "Least you need to know" part in every chapter, making it easy to read or skim through.

Great instructor,

A fantastic book that augments TFLB that comes with the camera. It cuts through the tech jargon and gets to the point quickly and conceisely. While sometimes trying to be too witty, it is certainly an excellant book to launch one into the world of DSLR. This is the only reason I didn't give it five stars.

Good beginner book for digital photographers,

I recently purchased this book to help me get aquainted with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. The book is very easy to read and provides you with just the right amount of information to use your camera. It even provides some help on buying a camera if you are reading the book prior to ownership of a Canon EOS product. The book also serves as a good quick reference guide if you need to go back and revisit topics. If your a beginner to digital photography and your thinking of buying a Canon EOS or already own one, this book is for you.

I'm a beginner -- first time with a "real" camera, so this book was just what I needed. It is clear and concise, easy to read, with appropriate little side-notes to sum up a chapter. I especially love Mr. Sherman's occasional bits of wit. It's light-hearted, yet very informative. Makes experimenting with my new camera fun! (Re: another reviewer's comment that it doesn't cover all the Canon models -- well, of course not! The models are changing all the time! There were probably new models out before the book could even hit print. No book could be completely perfect.)

This book's title is "Idiot's Guide to Canon EOS Digital Cameras" so therefore I expected this book to teach in simple terms how to operate and use the Canon EOS as a photographer's tool. I was really disappointed to find that the author covered basics of general photography and very little on the Canon cameras. In addition, the photography was poorly selected. I do not recommend buying this book. You would be better off purchasing a DVD on the Canon cameras say from Blue Crane series or buy a book on a specific Canon EOS model. I find the DVD's are more interactive and visual and you learn more.
