5.0 out of 5 stars What to buy, how to tie, which fly... it's all here!
This is the perfect book for those of us who marvel at the art of fly-fishing but are too scared to try it. Shook will help you decide what equipment to buy and what is really needed. He explains the basics of how to find the fish, and once you do... how to bring 'em in. The science of understanding the flies and their lifecycle and how it relates to catching fish...

3.0 out of 5 stars Ultimately, a Waste
I had great hopes when I sat down to read the Complete Idiot's Guide to Fly fishing. I'd taken a couple of casting courses, and I've really been looking forward to finding something I could enjoy.

But then I noticed that there's nothing in this book about the proper means of storing the fish you catch so that it's in good condition for the dinner table. In...

This is the perfect book for those of us who marvel at the art of fly-fishing but are too scared to try it. Shook will help you decide what equipment to buy and what is really needed. He explains the basics of how to find the fish, and once you do... how to bring 'em in. The science of understanding the flies and their lifecycle and how it relates to catching fish is simplified for us beginners. All the best knots are explained and adequately illustrated. This is a great book for the beginner fly-fisherman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great field reference, May 29, 2001

Many fly fishing "manuals" focus on the "art" of fly fishing as opposed to the purpose - TO CATCH FISH. This book is for the fisherman who wants to CATCH fish and not worry about how he/she looks standing in a stream laying out the perfect roll cast. Best of all, for me, it is a great field manual I keep in my truck when I do get out a few times per year...I can barely remember how to tie my shoes and the illustrated knots in the book are right there at my fingertips.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book First -- Save Lots of Money!, July 16, 2001

This is the best basic overview of fly fishing on the market today. It's fun to read, wonderfully illustrated, and very helpful.

I recommend it to all my fly fishing friends as a good buy. With this book in your library, you'll reduce needed shelf space and save tons of money to spend on gadgets and gear.

Trust me on this one. The others just don't measure up. Get it, read it, and enjoy hooking up with loads of fish.

And, by the way -- be sure to always practice "catch and release". Leave the waters full for others. Thank you kindly.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great buy for beginners and intermediates, October 18, 1999

I've been fly fishing my whole life and I still enjoyed this book. The author Michael Shook also wrote fly fishing guides which I've used extensively. Shook has written more than just a "how to" book. He explains the rationale behind his choice of material, technique and equipment choices.

Finally a book on fly fishing that makes this crazy scientific sport easy to understand. It answered questions that I've always been too emarrassed to ask.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!, July 14, 2004

This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fly Fishing (Paperback)
This is an excellent book. I've read a couple others on the market and this is by far the easiest book to understand. This book cuts through all the garbage and tells you exactly what you need to know from what to buy, how to practice, how to choose a fly, and what to do once you've caught that trophy fish.

If you are going to only buy one fly-fishing guide this is by far the best choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars I am an idiot and it helped me!, October 20, 2004

This is an awesome book that covers everything one might need to know about flyfishing. I am totally green in this subject and I feel like after reading the book, I have an understanding about the basic principles of the sport. It covers everything from equipment to tying flies, from the basics of casting to detailed information about trout and bass.

One small gripe, however, is that there are a lack of pictures in this book. I am a visual learner and it would greatly help if the book had illustrations of how to fly fish a stream, where the fish hide, and so forth. I found that the Orvis guide was extremely helpful in the illustrations.

I am new to fly fishing and picked up this book along with the LL Bean fly fishing book. Although this book isn't in color I found the Idiots guide to be a better overall book than the LL Bean book. I have found the Idiots guide to be full of great reference and instructions for beginners. I would definitely recommend this book if you are a beginner and trying to learn the sport.

Thanks for your quick delivery. This a great book for an amateur such as myself to learn the various nuances of fly fishing, especially the few, simpler knots I need to learn to tie.
