"The Complete Idiot's Guide To Getting Published Fifth Edition" by Sheree Bykofsky and Jennifer Basye Sander is a very good general overview of getting a book published. Like other books in the series, it provides simple and well organized advice on the topic. There are many books that delve deeper into the topics presented here, but this is a good general book on the entire process. Once read, an author or aspiring author can look to these other resources for the areas he or she needs more information.

I like how the authors are both motivational, with encouragement to write, but honest in how difficult it can be and that many books published both in the traditional manner and by indies with POD don't sell very much, if at all. I felt they provided an honest look at the industry.

The book contains twenty-five chapters divided into five parts. These are: Part 1: As You Begin to Write with chapters on So Why Write, Write What, If You Need an Idea Stalk the Best-Seller List, Super-Stealth Market Research Techniques and What's Hot, What's Not. Part 2: Submitting to Publishers contains chapters on Submit What, Queries That Sell Nonfiction, Bulletproof Nonfiction Book Proposals, and Fun with Fiction. Part 3: Getting a Book Contract.

After reading this book, I feel more confident in my endeavors to become a published author. Sheree and Jennifer give great tips, as well as outline the important steps on how to become published. All of this in an easy to understand format. There are so many authors out there who have books rumbling around in their heads to books already written. However, they don't move to the next step of publishing, due to fear, lack of confidence, and pretty much lack of knowledge. Definitely pick up this book because it will help you in all those aspects. Thank you Sheree & Jennifer. Happy Publishing! ~WU

I was expecting to be enlightened. That didn't really happen. It may have reinforced some things, but really...just save your money.

I'm not a published author, but I hope to be one. This book isn't a magic key into the Land of Publishers, but it is a fairly good travel guide. My confidence was increased by the book's straightforward explanation of how to craft a non-fiction proposal and what to expect once your proposal is finished. I'm grateful for the guidance. This book is particularly excellent in combination with Jeff Herman's guide to literary agents.

I have bought and read several books on publishing in the last year, and this is the one I liked the best, by far.

The authors have a mountain of writing and publishing experience between them. They write in a fun, easy to read style. The book is entertaining while still managing to be packed full of useful information. They give detailed descriptions of every step involved in publishing. The instructions are easy to follow and extremely helpful. This book breaks everything down and makes it seem very managable. This was helpful, in my opinion, because the process of seeking publication was far more intimidating to me than actually writing the book itself.

The fifth edition of this book came out a few weeks after I bought the fourth edition - I liked it so well that I went ahead and bought the fifth edition too. The fifth edition is great - it adds more information about email and online submssions, ebooks, and all of the most recent changes in technology and publishing. It was well worth the purchase price of the duplicate copy.

This book is outstanding in every way.

Pros: Excellent, insightful detail, excellent information, excellent presentation, Unique perspective

Cons: None

Let me start with this... This is one of the best books that I have ever read on the publishing industry.

I have read many books on the publishing industry (both traditional and self-publishing). Most of them are helpful; however they often regurgitate most of the same information that can easily be found on the Internet. This book was a little bit different. Written by two insiders of the publishing industry (Sheree Bykofsky and Jennifer Basye Sander), it provides a unique and user-friendly look into a side that most authors and readers rarely consider, the agent. Readers, for example, will get insight into the submission process, contracts, negotiation, and royalties. Both authors use their vast experience with the publishing world to give their take on small things such as the appropriate time and manner to follow up with an editor. These are things that aren't really discussed in most publishing books, sadly.

Another great thing about this book is the comprehensive view of the publishing process. Bykofsky and Sander show in various chapters all of the necessary steps it takes to get a book from a query to a completed manuscript on a bookshelf. After reading this, readers (including me) will be humbled by the huge machinery that goes into publishing, distributing, marketing, and selling a book.

This was an incredible book that I recommend every current or prospective author (traditionally published or not) read because it conveys a sense of the immensity of the task behind publishing a book. The book is focused on traditional publishing, except for 1 or 2 chapters, but every chapter offers something to every author. Knowing this before you get into the publishing game will become a huge advantage.

I will definitely be adding this to my reference shelf
