Do not use this book, it is FULL FULL FULL of mistakes!!!!, September 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own (Paperback)
My boyfriend bought this book to learn my language, and the deal was that we would work on it together. Well, I dumped it without regret very quickly. I've never seen a book so full of mistakes, grammar, gender, typos, and on and on with an average of over one error a page!!! I cannot believe this book has been edited by people who speak French as mother tongue. It does look good and well structured, and it would be a good book if it would only be edited properly before publication. I am very sorry for all the people who have learned French with this book, it will be difficult to change the mistakes they have learned.

Pretty good, November 4, 1999
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own (Paperback)
I've been working on this book for a little while now, and it is very good for someone who is a beginner, even as a beginner myself I have still been able to find mistakes in the books editing, but this is a good book for anyone just starting, but I recomend a good course set after your finished learning the basics here, like "Ultimate French", and perhaps a good computer course also, while you're working on this book, get a few tapes also so you can hear the language before you develope bad habbits, may sound like alot of work, but anyone who says they can learn a language in 2 days is full of it.

The Idiot's Guide is indeed for idiots!, April 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own (Paperback)
Anyone who thinks he can learn French, or any foreign language other than say pig latin, in two days is out of his mind. The primary purpose of this guide is to snooker $15.00 out of suckers who think that a language can be learned in some quick-fix manner. If you really want to learn some French, be willing to spend a little time each day for 3 months or so. Use the ASSIMIL method (French With Ease) or Hugo's French in 3 months.

Helpful Book, November 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own (Paperback)
This book is really helpful and interesting to read. But I can't really believe that these other people are claiming that by using this book, they were speaking French in 2 days. This book has a very good explanation of pronunciation in French -- which I have never seen anywhere else before. It made the seemingly random omissions of letters in French make sense to me. However, even though my daughter attends a French school and I have been studying this book, I would say that I am really far from being able to come close to having a conversation in French. I think that it would be much more helpful if this book came with a CD or cassette. I am fluent in Spanish, Russian and English, so I think that I am fairly good at picking up languages; however, I learned the other languages in the University setting. This is the first time I have tried to learn a language without a teacher or a class, and even with this well-written book, it is definitely a much less effective method for me.

This book is absolutely fantastic, June 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own (Paperback)
I got this book on Wednesday (today is Friday) and already I can read and speak French rather proficiently. Gail Stein makes things very clear. I do not remember being confused while reading this book. The pronunciation guide makes even the toughest words simple. Not only is "Complete Idiot's Guide to French" easy to use, but it teaches the language with a bit of humor, unlike a standard textbook. Ce livre est très bon, mes amis

C'est Fantastique!, May 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning French on Your Own (Paperback)
This book is my bible! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in teaching themselves French. There are very good explanations for the grammatical as well as the verbal aspects of the language. I especially love the pronunciation key next to vocabulary words, they are very helpful, although it is sometimes hard to feel confident saying the words without having heard them... Although the grammar level is fairly elementary, this book provides helpful tips and phrases for grasping a general idea of the language. There are many different areas of interest concerning the vocabulary which is wonderful! Achetez ce livre! C'est trés magnifique!

This book is easy to use and understand. It makes learning French easy, and fun. The author makes French understandable, but does not make you feel like an idiot in any way when you read the book. This book is worth every cent I paid for it!

Gail Stein really makes learning French very easy with this book. I have had the book for only a couple of days, and I am able to actually speak French, it's incredible! She makes learning French seem easy, which it is, if you have the right book. And this is definitely the right book! I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to learn French, because there is no better book than this.
