This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Lowering your Cholesterol (Kindle Edition)
Written by Cardiologist Dr. Joseph Lee Klapper, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol" is divided into five parts: The Heart of the Problem; Nutrition for Lower Cholesterol; Mind and Body Approaches for Lowering Cholesterol; Medications and Natural Remedies; and Dr. Klapper's Step by Step Guide to Losing Cholesterol Points. Along the way he shows readers how to understand cholesterol; what LDL, HDL, and triglycerides are; what foods are good and bad for your cholesterol; how exercise can help; how beverages (including alcohol) affect your cholesterol; whether or not you should take medications for your cholesterol; talks about supplements, herbs, antioxidants, and more. The book also includes a glossary, suggested further reading, and heart healthy recipes.
For the most part I found "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol" to be really helpful. I learned what foods are good for my cholesterol (fish, poultry, lean beef, fruits and vegetables) and which are bad (bacon, sausage, fried food, pastries, processed foods). One eye-opening fact I learned was how bad nondairy creamers - I had no idea how much damage they can do to your arteries. Dr. Klapper explains thoroughly (if a bit too technically at times for a book aimed at "idiots") the difference between good cholesterol and bad cholesterol, and how it is easier to lower LDL than it is to raise HDL. He also goes into detail about what triglycerides are and what they can do to your body - scary stuff. I also found the section on whether or not to use cholesterol lowering drugs very informative (Dr. Klapper describes each drug available and how it works) as well as whether or not dietary supplements help lower your cholesterol. The information on what foods to eat (or not eat) was very informative and I found the recipes included in the book to be very helpful. My one complaint about the book is how often Dr. Klapper pushed the Paleolithic diet - I understand the health benefits of the diet, but it got to the point where it felt like he was getting a commission each time he mentioned the diet! I found "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol" to be very informative and have made some lifestyle changes after reading it. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to lower their cholesterol, but doesn't know how or where to start.
