I have been running since the mid 1960's and have done eight marathons but I still learned a lot from this book. It is an excellent book for several reasons- it's easy to read, comprehensive, insightful and extremely practical. The book is more oriented to beginners and intermediate but there are things in the book even for advanced runners. For example he covers the Pose and Chi running methods, he explains why Kenyans are such good runners and well as some superb psychological tips.

It covers all the basics beginning with why people decide to run, nutrition, cross-training, choosing a training program, staying motivated, dealing with injuries, preparing for the race day, doing the race and how best to recovery. Even the appendix is an encyclodia of great information: glossary, resources, popular races, sample training programs, and strength training drills. The book will help you have a better marathon experience than just simply joining a running group. Highly recommended!

This is a great book with plenty of detail, plenty of science and JUST ENOUGH personal story telling to keep you motivated.

It has everything from nutrition, to hydration, to fueling, to stretching, to clothing, to proper form, to.... well, a complete training plan. It really covers all the bases.

This book came out after I had completed my first marathon but, let me tell you, that I picked it up and continue to refer to it as I continue to train for more marathons. I will actually soon be buying it, for the third time, because I continue to give it to marathoners-to-be.

Thank you for providing both a comprehensive guide to marathon training as well as making it both easy to read and entertaining. Well done.

I do know books that ramble on. but in my opinion this was not one of them. From explaining how muscles work to what types of training do for our muscles, the authors follow a logical progression in their writing. Including the reasons for stretching and strength work then specific exercises was helpful. They even included a training schedule for both 1/2 and full marathon with ample explanation on why they want me to do the specific item on that specific day. They go so far to cover theories other than their own so the reader has a full understanding.
Simply a non-complicated book that will give you results. Truly I consider this the Jack Daniels' book for the common man
