I am disappointed in this book. He has all the facts but he sure could have livened it up for "idiots" with a time line, drawings of the clothes they wore, what their day to day lives were like and for the love of Heaven--MAPS!! He talks about areas and you either have to guess, envision or get out an atlas but that doesn't help with the old vs. new names of countries. Might as well read a dry college textbook--facts, dates, names, facts, dates, names!! It is definitely NOT a FUN book!!

This is a great book for giving you a good break down of the Middle Ages and how it all comes together. Very well put together and written very well. I really enjoyed reading it.

I was very disappointed in this book, it was definitely not up to the normal Idiot's Guides standards. Written at a very juvenile level, with a very condescending tone, it also manages to promulgate many out-worn stereotypes of the Middle Ages. Not for anyone with a sincere interest in the Middle Ages.

2/14: The prose of The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Middle Ages is painfully tedious, making it hard for me to get through the reading. Instead of a story, I am given a laundry list of persons, their accomplishments, battles, and outcomes in a dry manner. Over time, I lose motivation and am reading the book intermittently, finally finishing it after three weeks, when I know I can finish it in several days. Although I am an atheist, the religion stories are so dull that it seems to me that hallucinations through disorders may be a plausible reason for the so-called visions. Throughout the book, the author is hell-bent on proving to the readers that the Middle Ages wasn't really the Dark Ages. Well, I am not convinced, and I still say it was truly the Dark Ages, an era of backwardness, misogyny, and lack of advancement in science and mathematics in courtesy of religious fanatics. All in all, a note to the author: when writing a history book like The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Middle Ages, enliven it up, will you please? We are still the poor simple idiots.
