Book Description

002864462X 978-0028644622 June 3, 2003
Although our oceans are some of the most beautiful and diverse environments in the world, most people know very little about the ocean's ecology or just how much humans depend on the oceans for survival.

The Complete Idiot's Guide’ to the Oceans will be a marine-lover's reference for mapping the world's oceans and their exploration.

Authors will provide key illustrations to help readers understand important concepts along the way with a color photo insert presenting a wide array of marine creatures and habitats.

5.0 out of 5 stars But Not So Complete Idiots Will Like It Too., November 25, 2006
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Oceans (Paperback)
Of course one has to be predisposed to an interest in this topic, but if you saw David Attenbourrough's recent Blue Planet Series you will come away with a similar impression but a much more in-depth knowledge of the subject. As a former oceanography student I can say that this book is aimed at readers of all levels of knowledge. They make a potentially dry topic (no pun meant) quite interesting. The chapters consist of describiing estuaries in the land-sea ecotome to the barren and alien quality of the abyssal plain. Marine flora and fauna are featured prominently. I recommend this for anyone with a casual interest and greater. Looks good on a bookshelf also!

5.0 out of 5 stars Swimming in Information on the Oceans, November 22, 2008
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Oceans (Paperback)
As someone who has always been fascinated with the oceans and the vast differences between them, this is a great book to learn about the Earth's huge bodies of water. This is a must-read for the junior scientist or the person who is interested in this multifaceted subject.

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprising, August 27, 2008
By
Michael Carpenter (Virginia, MN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Oceans (Paperback)
This book has good information on the oceans. As much as you could like without a specialized interest. However, the author is a proponent of intelligent design, which makes me want to puke.

They discuss how the Earth is "perfectly designed" for life.

Anyone who thinks that is a good argument for Creationism obviously does not understand the very basic premise of evolution.

The Earth isn't suited for life, life is suited for the Earth. We adapt to our environment. It doesn't adapt for us.

Other than all of that nonsense, it's a good book.
