5.0 out of 5 stars Complete Idiot reviews this
I'm brand new to this sport (just started watching the UFC and IFL
shows on TV) and really didn't know what I was watching since I've
never really done martial arts. My wife picked this up for me the
other day and I read it cover to cover. Its great! This is the kind
of book thats perfect for a new viewer and it explains what is going on...

3.0 out of 5 stars "...Complete Idiot's Guide.." title very accurate for this UFC book
I looked through this book when I was at a bookstore earlier today. While I enjoy UFC and mixed martial arts in general, I was dissappointed by this. While it is written by former UFC middleweight champ RIch Franklin, it had flaws.

1. This book is geared towards person with no MMA knowledge. The first part of the book overfocused on MMA history. While a...

I'm brand new to this sport (just started watching the UFC and IFL

never really done martial arts. My wife picked this up for me the
other day and I read it cover to cover. Its great! This is the kind
of book thats perfect for a new viewer and it explains what is going on
during the stand up part of the fight, when they clinch, and then when
they go to the ground. Lets face it, its tough seeing the action on
the ground and I had no idea what they were trying to do. This book
explained it all and really helped me become a better fan. Highly
recommended, especially for people who want to understand all the
tactics that fighters are trying to apply. Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For UFC Fans, September 11, 2007
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Ultimate Fighting (Paperback)
This book is an excellent introduction to the world of ultimate fighting. The book starts with a nice history of the sport, and adds other nice bits of history throughout the book. This is followed by an in depth look at the rules of ultimate fighting. Finally we get in to the real meat of the book. Discussion and examples of all the different fighting styles. It starts with a discussion about stand up and clinch fighting. Then it takes it to the ground with chapters on the guard, half guard, side mount, and full mount. There are lots of pictures to explain all the different techniques. Then it's on to suggestions for training. The book closes with a nice bio of Rich Franklin. I also liked the fighter profiles throughout the book, the used a very good mix of hall of fame fighters, and new talents. Another added bonus was little sections on classic fights. This is great for the new ultimate fighting fan because it can help them track down must see classic matches. In closing I think this book is exactly what it claims to be, if you are new ultimate fighting fan it will get you up to speed quickly.

3.0 out of 5 stars "...Complete Idiot's Guide.." title very accurate for this UFC book, September 5, 2007
This review is from: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Ultimate Fighting (Paperback)

While a newcomer would not know much, the introduction would be old news to most UFC fans.

2. Lack of details in photos. Admittedly, the book contains numerous photos. Unfortunately, the photos are not very descriptive. In many good books and martial arts magazines, an author would use 6-7 photos to describe a technique or tactic. This book only used 2-3 per technique or tactic.

3. Overuse of profiles. While the profiles are interesting to look at, they are interspersed throughout the book. The random dispersement can be distracting.

If you are a total newcomer with no knowledge of the sport, this would be worth buying. If you are a hardcore fan eager for knowledge or a MMA fighter looking for development, better books exist.

1.0 out of 5 stars Its Mixed Martial Arts, not "Ultimate Fighting", October 7, 2007

Calling MMA ultimate fighting is like calling football NFL. The book isn't only for idiots; it was made BY idiots too.
