Perfect for the Beginner! Great book!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Visual Basic 6 (The Complete Idiot's Guide) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book. Very easy to read. I tried several other beginner books and they failed at what this book was meant to do and that's make Visual Basic programming easy to understand. No fluff to obscure the principles. Great Job! Clayton you think you might write one in the same style as this on more advanced topics of Visual Basic? It would be a great seller.

A Fine Complementary Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Visual Basic 6 (The Complete Idiot's Guide) (Paperback)
I picked up The Complete Idiot's Guide to VB 6 at the library after having gone through part of Learn to Program with Visual Basic 6 by John Smiley, and, when I sat down to read it (not at my computer, but just for the fun of it), I kept saying, "Oh, THAT'S what that meant!" I'm brand new to any kind of computer programming and, while I gained some knowledge from Dr. Smiley's book, it took this book to really make some of the concepts clear to me. Had I started with this one, I'm not sure that I would feel the same way, but I would strongly recommend this book as an adjunct to other books on this same subject. We don't just buy (or borrow) one book on a subject this big, do we?

Great Introduction!,

This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Visual Basic 6 (The Complete Idiot's Guide) (Paperback)
Don't pan this book because it only covers the basics. For the intended audience, it IS a 5-star book. While I did require a more advanced text (my favorite is Special Edition Using Visual Basic 6) nearly right away, this book got me going VERY quickly. If you're thinking of sticking your toe into the water of VB6, start here - then get yourself a more advanced book. By the way, I still make reference to it when I need a quick look-up on the basics (I don't program every day, so I get rusty).

Nice intro to VB, not a lot of substance.,

This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Visual Basic 6 (The Complete Idiot's Guide) (Paperback)
I bought this book as a whim (on sale at Sam's Club) and immmediately set down to read the book.On the plus side, the writing style is very easy to read. It also presents concepts in an easy to grasp manner. If you have been having problems getting the basics of VB6, then this could be the book for you. However, if you want to get past the basic concepts, I would suggest another book. While the material is easy to grasp and may give you the jump start you need to get rolling, it will also leave you wanting for more. This might be a good thing.

A fun to read introduction to VB,
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Visual Basic 6 (The Complete Idiot's Guide) (Paperback)
This book is fun to read, yet it still manages to introduce the most useful tasks in VB. Each of the 26 chapters is short enough to keep you on your toes and long enough to give you a sense of accomplishment at the end.Written not just for people new to VB6 but programming in general. I found the "Programmer's Guide" on the VB6 CDROM too technical but this book was easier to follow. The author throws in lots of jokes to make the new concepts and technical terms more fun to learn. If you've never programmed before and want to make a start, buy this book, which includes a "working model" of VB6 on CD.

I was scared of .net,liked QBASIC and wanted to learn Visual Basic. I actually picked this book more because of the free software but found the concepts very clearly explained and with a detailed explanation of basics that would keep the beginner interested and induce thinking ahead of the pace of the book.

The Complete Idiot's Guide To Visual Basic 6,
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Visual Basic 6 (The Complete Idiot's Guide) (Paperback)
This book is an excellent resource for the beginner. The author assumes nothing and the result is an easy to follow guide in the learning process. All of the sample codes ran and the author explained each program in full, line by line. Clear and well organized. This is the first Visual Basic 6 book I would buy.

Good book for beginners,

I turned to this book after trying to plough my way through the Microsoft book by Halvorson (weak) and the Wrox book by Wright (good, but heavy going). Walnum does a better job of breaking up the subjects and explaining their importance. The jokes get a bit annoying, as it's obvious the style that there must be at least one per page, but there is some useful information in here for beginners. I would suggest working you way through this and the Wrox book either sequentially or side by side.

This review is from: Complete Idiot's Guide to Visual Basic 6 (The Complete Idiot's Guide) (Paperback)
This is the best book on vb6 I have ever read!! it really tells you facts about vb! it is detailed but it is concise (not to mention interesting) enough not to let you sleep on the page you are reading on! but I thought chapter 5 in part two was a little confusing therefore I had to read it over and over and over and over and over again, but I learned my stuff!!! At first I didnt know vb6 NOW I DO!! Of course not all of it, this book only starts you off! it even says it isnt a whole reference guide. (I meant that as a warning to more advanced people) |
