From Library Journal

Who was Jesus and what did he really say? Though not attempting to answer that question, Mayotte, a self-trained theologian, offers a database of sorts to assist in the process. He has gathered sayings attributed to Jesus from 24 ancient sources, including the New Testament, the New Testament Apocrypha, and the Nag Hammadi Gnostic texts, and arranged them, without comment, into nine categories. He uses standard translations of the apocryphal and Gnostic texts and three versions of the canonical writings (KJV, NKJV, RSV). Though there is some value in extracting these sayings and making them available in one place, weaknesses limit the usefulness of this work. First, there are notable omissions; for example, the words of Jesus in Acts 1, 9, 11, 20, 22, and 26 and 1 Corinthians 11 are excluded. Second, some of Mayotte's "parables" are actually proverbs, and some of his "doctrines" are warnings or commandments. A few of the sayings appear in more than one category. This volume has promise but needs reworking. Not recommended.?Craig W. Beard, Univ. of Alabama at Birmingham Lib.

5.0 out of 5 stars A complete and exhaustive collection of sayings by Jesus, March 9, 2005
This review is from: The Complete Jesus: All the Sayings of Jesus Gathered in a Single Volume for the First Time (Paperback)
A lifelong student of the history of religion, Ricky Alan Mayhotte has produced what can only be called a seminal, breakthrough work that should be read by every member of the clergy and ever member of the Christian congregations they serve regardless of denominational affiliation. The Complete Jesus is nothing short of a complete and exhaustive collection of sayings by Jesus as recording in 23 documents surviving from antiquity. In addition to the four biblical gospels and "Book of Revelations", this ancient sources include Christian Gnostic writings and New Testament Apocrypha ranging from "The Book of Thomas", to "The Gospel of Mary", to "The Apocryphon of James", to "The Sophia of Jesus Christ", to "The Acts of John", to the "Epistle of Titus", to "The Apocalypse of Peter". The sayings of Jesus are impressively organized into nine chapters: Commandments, Parables, Jesus Speaking About Himself, Warnings And Admonitions, Teachings And Proverbs, Hymns And Prayers, Jesus Laughing, Diverse Doctrine, Apocalyptic And Revelation. Enhanced with appendices that provide the reader with the descriptions of the New Testament books, the Gnostic documents, and the Apocrypha writings which served as the sources for the diverse quotations from Jesus. "Jesus said, Who ever finds the world and becomes rich, let him renounce the world."

Very possibly the only book (or one of few books) of its kind out there, which benefits its value; however, the idential sayings from the cannonical gospels and the gospel of Thomas are all considered individually, so it gets somewhat repetitive. A decent source, though.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware!, February 2, 2012

This review is from: The Complete Jesus: All the Sayings of Jesus Gathered in a Single Volume for the First Time (Paperback)
I believe that the Bible is the inerrant, infallible Word of God. If you agree...this book is not for you. THE COMPLETE JESUS contains so called "quotes" of Jesus from sources that are not approved by normal Christian authorities.. These "extra biblical" writings are not of interest to me. Purchasing the book was a mistake on my part.
A better choice would be:
