About the Author

Tanya Huff may have left Nova Scotia at three, and has lived most of her life since in Ontario, but she still considers herself a Maritimer. On the way to the idyllic rural existence she shares with her partner Fiona Patton, six cats, and a chihuahua, she acquired a degree in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson Polytechnic—an education she was happy to finally use while writing her recent Smoke novels. Of her previous twenty-three books, the five—Blood Price, Blood Trail, Blood Lines, Blood Pact, Blood Debt—featuring Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of Henry VIII, romance writer, and vampire are among the most popular. The Complete Keeper Chronicles (2012) is a Fantasy Omnibus of the Keeper series, including Summon the Keeper, The Second Summoning, and Long Hot Summoning. The Keepers maintain a balance between good and evil. Their primary tool is possibility itself. Their task is to repair breaches between the Realities, such as here and Hell, as well as between the Realities and the Otherside, a universe of unresolved possibilities. Their companions are cats.

Summon the Keeper (1998) is the first novel in this series. Claire Hansen is summoned to the Elysian Fields Guest House, arriving in a torrential downpour. The host resembles a gnome as he signs her in and gives her the keys to Room 1. Claire has a horrendous headache and a buzz in her ears, so she and her cat Austin retire early.

The next day, she awakes feeling much better and the summoning has disappeared sometime in the night. Going downstairs, she finds Dean, the handyman and cook, preparing breakfast. She learns that she is now the owner of the guest house.

When she responds with skepticism, Dean shows her his note from Augustus Smythe and then takes her to the owner's rooms, where a large manila envelope contains half a dozen documents, including a bill of sale, and a short note: "Stay out of Room 6". After hacksawing the padlock and breaking open the door lock, she discovers that Room 6 houses a middle aged woman, asleep with a thick layer of dust covering her.

"The Complete Keeper Chronicles" by Tanya Huff is a trilogy of fantasy books featuring Keeper Claire Hansen. "Summon the Keeper" introduces Claire and snarky cat companion Austin after she has been `Summoned' to a hotel called the Elysian Fields Guest House, meets the wonderfully naive and obsessively clean Dean McIssac and deals with Hell in the basement (oh, and the woman who has been entranced so long that she has a layer of dust covering her). "The Second Summoning" deals with the aftermath of an intimate encounter that results in a angel becoming flesh, complete with the body of a teenage boy. Claire's younger sister, Diana, helps deal with the resultant struggle to balance good and evil which is complicated by its personification in bodies that have to cope with hormones and gender identity as well as questions about the veracity of homeless people and their use as a role model. "Long Hot Summoning" features Diana as she finishes high school and finally receives her first official Summoning which she attempts to deal with supported by the vocal but sometimes naive cat Sam and her older sister Claire. Adventures on the Otherside lead to mall elves, a scary security guard and rapidly shifting environments, a young guy wielding Excalibur and an ongoing and very vocal nemesis while back home there are the minor irritants of a mummy, a basilisk and an overabundance of minivans at the mall.

This fun fantasy trilogy is filled with sarcasm, acrobatic feats and remarkable feats of manipulation...and that's just the cats' contributions!

Tanya Huff is a strong reliable writer. This book is a great example. She keeps the story moving while developing characters and showcasing their quirks. She leaves you wanting to start the next book in the series immediately even though it's 1 am and you have to go to work in a few hours.
