We bought this Gil Hibben "Knife Throwing Guide" to help get us started in knife throwing. My son and I have started throwing as a hobby and it has proven a fun pass time with a healthy bit of competition as we both improve. We have started with 3 Pieces Black Spider Throwing Knife Set 6" Overall Length (which work well), and recently ordered (and like) United Cutlery Gil Hibben Small Competition Triple Thrower Set w/Leather Sheath as well.
As other reviewers have noted, the book is very thin but it is packed full of important practical information that would be hard to piece together from other sources. The section on knife selection is very well written but certainly does read a little bit like an advertisement for his line knives (but then again he IS the "leader" in this field). The throwing instruction sections are very good, including easy to follow instructions with pictures and illustrations are very helpful, especially showing the proper grip for the "standard" overhand release. Additional pictures on other release methods would have been welcome. There is also an interesting section on axe throwing, but I'm not ready to tackle that area yet. The section on choosing and building a targets was very worthwhile to me since we have a dedicated practice area for our throwing. Expert advice on what "works" is why I invest in these types of books since it tends to save in the long run. As noted above, this is a good starting point and certainly worth the investment if you are planning on taking up this fun hobby. Recommended! CFH

The guide is well written and covers all questions you might ask. It is definitely written for the beginner but still good information. As the president of the Knife Makers Guild, Gil Hibben knows every aspect of the knives he throws. Looking forward to his next venture.

Recieved product quickly. Got a lot of useful information on the subject of throwing knives that is allowing me to enjoy myself and relieving stress while throwing the throwing knives I purchased at the target board I purchased at the same time. Thank you for your assistance.

Read the description. 69 pages. For anyone who can't visualize sixty-nine small sheets of paper, it's about as thick as a quarter, little more than a pamphlet. It's got an overview on different knives, and basic instructions, with semi-helpful pictures, but not much else. The last few pages are dedicated to a minibiography on the author, and color photos of his knife collections. I found the most useful part of the book to be the 'section' dedicated to designing a target. As for throwing itself, I found more useful material on YouTube.

this small how-to-book gives you just about all the step and technique there is for throwing knives, and other bladed items as well. the only way it could be better is having an instructor hold your hand as you throw....in other words....if you cant figure it out wth this book....find a dojo or dont throw.

This book will get you started but I had to get a more detailed book. Also, it almost seems like a catalog for the author's knives.

This book was very enjoyable to read, being from one of the masters of the knife world, but is quite short. I enjoyed his personal history and beginnings of the road that led him to being one of the top names in the business. Time is spent on building a suitable target, for example. I would have liked more on throwing technique, practice methods, etc. I am in the process of ordering other books on throwing that cover other than the "overhand" throw.
