Joan M. Harwell has over 25 years of experience as a regular classroom teacher and a special education teacher for educationally handicapped children in the schools of San Bernadino, CA. She has run several remedial programs for slow learners, and is the author of Ready-to-Use Information & Materials for Assessing Specific Learning Disabilities (1995), Ready-to-Use Tools & Materials for Remediating Specific Learning Disabilities (1995), and Ready-to-Use Learning Disabilities Activities Kit (1993), published by The Center for Applied Research in Education.

ABOUT THE HANDBOOK The aim of this handbook is to give you useful information regarding the diagnosis and remediation of learning disabilities. Designed for all in-service elementary and secondary educators, it seeks to provide practical suggestions to make work with learning-disabled students and their parents more effective. Experienced regular teachers and specialists will find many ideas for use in their daily lesson planning. And beginning teachers, too, should find the handbook invaluable. For easy use, the handbook is organized into the following seven chapters: Chapter 1, "Learning Disabilities-An Overview," presents a brief historical review and gives answers to questions such as "What is it?", "What causes it?", "How many people have it?", and "What is the prognosis?" Chapter 2, "Identification and Planning to Meet Students Needs," reviews the identification process, gives insight into typical parental feelings about the condition, provides assistance in developing a workable Individual Education Plan (IEP), and explores the roles of a multitude of professionals in the planning phase. Chapter 3, "Classroom Management," guides the teacher in the areas of classroom and behavioral management: how to design lessons that teach quickly how to choose effective instructional materials, and how to group students for instruction. Chapter 4, "Intervention with Learning-Disabled Students," focuses on ways to help students with particular learning disabilities, including negative self-esteem, visual and auditory perceptual deficits, deficits in spatial awareness, conceptual deficits, poor memory, and attention deficit disorder.

Chapter 5, "Intervention in Specific Subject Areas," gives pointers on how to teach reading, spelling, writing skills and math and reference skills. These sections were written to answer teachers' questions in these areas. Included are sample goals to help in the development of the Individual Education Plan and sample lesson activities. Chapter 6, "Working with Older Learning-Disabled Students," explores intervention with the older student beginning with grade 4 and moving on through intermediate school and high school and into the collegiate or vocational training phase of the students life. Included in this chapter are suggestions for helping LD students to understand their disability (recognize their strengths), to develop their own strategies for learning, and to become their own advocate. Chapter 7, "A Call to Action," reminds us again that learning disabilities is a relatively new field and that we still have much to learn. It is also a plea to explore some changes in the law that would benefit the learning-disabled person. The handbook ends with a glossary, a list of testing materials, a list of sources of help, an educator's checklist of clues to vision problems, and an index designed to speed access to a particular topic.
