Review

"One of the most comprehensive position books I have ever read, by one of the game's best to have ever coached the position! Lou Tepper's book on linebacker play is a must for every coach's library and also would be a great supplement for their players' notebooks. Some of Lou's ideas and concepts and drills have certainly influenced our thinking about linebacker play here at the Academy."
Fisher DeBerry
Head Coach
United States Air Force Academy

"Lou's linebackers consistently play as well or better than other linebackers I've seen, and they aren't always the most talented. The answers to how and why they perform so well are in this book. You're in for a learning experience."
Dick Vermeil
Head Coach
St. Louis Rams

”When I worked with Lou Tepper at the University of Colorado, I was watching one of the best teachers of the fundamentals in the college game. From linebacking to the overall defensive scheme, Lou’s players always maximized their potential.”

”This book is a must for every linebacker, head coach, and defensive coach. It will be the classic reference on linebacking for many years to come. This work is long overdue. I wish Complete Linebacking had been available when I began coaching.”

More About the Author

Lou Tepper brings more than 45 years of experience as a college football coach to Complete Linebacking. Since 2012, Tepper has served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Buffalo. As head coach, Tepper has won over 100 games, with stints at the University of Illinois (1991-96), Edinboro University of Pennsylvania (2000-05), and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2006-10).

He took the Illini to three bowl games, including a win in the 1994 Liberty Bowl. At Edinboro, Tepper led his teams to three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) titles and two NCAA Division II playoff appearances. He was twice named PSAC West Coach of the Year. At Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he led the Crimson Hawks to an NCAA playoff appearance and was named PSAC West Coach of the Year for the third time.

In compiling an impressive 101-75-2 overall record as head coach, Tepper is well known for his genius on the defensive side of the ball. Tepper held the positions of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Louisiana State University (1997-99); defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Illinois (1988-91); linebackers coach, defensive coordinator, and assistant head coach at the University of Colorado (1983-87); and linebackers coach at Virginia Tech (1978-82).

In his career, Tepper mentored three Butkus Award winners--Colorado's Alfred Williams and Illinois' Dana Howard and Kevin Hardy--and developed more than 20 NFL linebackers, including Simeon Rice, John Holecek, nad Khalil Mack, fifth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. In recognition of his accomplishments and decade of service to the school, the University of Illinois endowed the Lou Tepper Football Scholarship to benefit linebackers in 2006.

I concur with the guy from Baton Rouge. Under the guidance of this supposed "defensive genius", Lou Tepper, the LSU Tigers had two of the worst seasons defensively in the history of the school. Several opposing offensive coordinators and QBs hinted at how easy it was to read Tepper's schemes and pick them apart. Thankfully, he is gone, and none too soon. His concepts for defense are rudimentary at best, and are now outmoded. If you want to read about real defense, get the book by Fritz Schurmer or one written by Bill Arnsparger.

Lou Tepper has demonstrated in the past 4-5 years that his coaching abilities may either be far outdated or just bad. Guiding his defense the past two years to the worst overall rating in the school's history shows his inability to coach quality players successfully. Tepper needs to "reinvent" his coaching techniques to adjust to the student-athlete of the 21st century.

I concur with the other reviewer that the negative reviews of Coach Tepper's book come exclusively from whiny LSU fans. It is not helpful in any way to claim "This guy is lost." or to point to Coach Tepper's defensive record at one lower echelon school when reviewing the book. The issue is whether or not you, as a reader, found the book helpful and insightful, not whether or not you, as a fan, think the Tigers' defense was poor.
I found this book EXTREMELY helpful. In almost every defense in modern football, linebacker is the most important position. They must have the speed of the defensive backs, the intelligence of the quarterback, the might of the linemen, and the fearlessness of the running backs, and they must use every bit of it on every play.
This book will give you the information needed to not only find these traits in the players that have it already, but evoke them in the players that don't quite have it yet.
Diagrammed on page seven is a drill called the "Jingle Jangle" that, in itself, is worth the price of the book, since it will greatly assist in determining which of your players has "change of direction" ability and speed. Both man to man and zone coverage skills are described in great detail, and drills are shown to effectively teach these defensive systems.
I greatly recommend this book to anyone who coaches football. It will have an immediate impact on your defense, regardless of the specific system you run.
Good luck,
"Coach" Wade

Coach Teppers book is as complete a book as I have ever read on a system of coaching defensive football. I wish I could have an afternoon with Coach Tepper to further discuss defensive football

The book does a great job of building a strong base for good linebacker play. It is a perfect mix of basics and advanced ideas for football coaches

I first read this book when I was in 8th grade and played for a city youth league. I went from playing the defensive line for every snap of my 4 year career to being the best linebacker in the league my first year playing. This book taught me all of the techniques I needed to know and gave my coaches good resources to improve performance. Now I go to high school and my freshman year I went up to varsity and played 50 lbs below the average backer at my school. This book is really a great way to learn and master the position. Any linebacker or anyone wanting to become a linebacker should definitely buy this book ASAP.

The "base, hit and shed" chapters are solid. For any coach looking for a place to begin with linebackers, this is it. This book is geared more toward fundamentals and drills rather than scheme. This book is what your looking for.

Linebacker coaches everywhere need this book! I'm sick of watching linebackers not doing the fundamental things. Read it, teach it and love it!
