Biography

Louis Armstrong was one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th Century thanks to the way he improvised with his trumpet. Among non-jazz fans, "Satchmo" is best known for singing ballads like "What a Wonderful World".

Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans in 1901. By the mid-20s he had moved to Chicago and was recording seminal jazz standards such as "Weatherbird", "Muggles" and "West… Read more in Amazon's Louis Armstrong Store

Editorial Reviews

Three CD set. The albums featuring Louis Armstrong's collaborations with the Dukes of Dixieland were among the first stereo recordings to fully capture Louis' magic sound. He played wonderful trumpet and vocal solos on classic songs that weren't part of his usual repertoire, such as 'Dixie', 'New Orleans' and 'Sweet Georgia Brown', which he had never previously recorded. This collection contains the complete works of Louis and the Dukes, including both the master takes and all of the alternates. Half of this music appears here on CD for the first time ever. 45 tracks. Essential Jazz Classics.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazing music flawed by bad mastering!, February 1, 2011
This review is from: Complete Louis Armstrong & The Dukes Of Dixieland (Audio CD)
If you are looking at this, chances are you are familiar with the type of music. What many people don't know about this music is that it was released by an old audiophile company called "Audio Fidelity" (no relation to the modern Audio Fidelity). The old Audio Fidelity took pride in releasing high quality, well recorded and mastered music. I own some of the original vinyl issues and the sound is simply amazing...true golden age recordings that were truly hi-fi.

Sadly, this high quality does NOT translate onto these releases. I give it a 3 star rating strictly for the musical content. The sound quality is abysmal when compared to the original vinyl releases. One would expect the vinyl to sound worse...have distortion, crackle and noise. Oddly enough, those problems are strictly limited to this CD reissue. It's a sad fact but the mastering on this set leaves much to be desired and I would say that the release sounds as bad as many bootlegs.

If you are looking to buy this for the music, please do...it's wonderful music. If you are expecting a sonic treat from the golden age of stereo recording....look elsewhere. I wish the modern Audio Fidelity company would pick up some of the stuff from the old Audio Fidelity and give it a proper release with the respect these artists deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Louis never sounded better!, March 2, 2009
This review is from: Complete Louis Armstrong & The Dukes Of Dixieland (Audio CD)
There is far too much "bad dixieland jazz" in the world, but here is one of the BEST examples of "Dixieland" the way it's spose to be! Louis never sounded any better and the Assuntos (Dukes of Dixieland) are as good as any back up band Louis ever had. These are many of the classics of New Orleans style Dixieland Jazz.... fun... exciting...blue... sassy and soulfull. This may be the best collection of New Orleans Style Dixieland Jazz ever recorded and with superios sound quality too! If you only have only have one Dixie set..... this is a good one. Every recording is a gem!

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect!, September 25, 2009

This review is from: Complete Louis Armstrong & The Dukes Of Dixieland (Audio CD)
This multi-disc collection of Louis Armstrong and the Dukes of Dixieland is excellent. If it was not for a few repetitions, it would be perfect. The sound quality is top notch and the liner notes are quite good for a modestly priced set of CDs.
