3.0 out of 5 stars Lacking in advanced details in lighting and technique., April 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Make-Up Artist: Working in Film, Television and Theatre (Paperback)
As a professional makeup artist I was hoping to find some answers to film and television lighting and camera effects but found none. I also find the book lacked any really good info about how to apply maakeup. The techniques listed were so general and basic they could only be for a novice. The real shocker is in incorrect historical references. For example, the author states that "Gone With the Wind" was set in the 1770's. The civil war, however, took place in the mid 1800's and is the setting for that movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Complete Makeup Artist Book written by Penny Delamar, March 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete Make-Up Artist: Working in Film, Television and Theatre (Paperback)
There are step by step photographs in this book that are truly amazing; as a whole it is a comprehensive assembly of all the information that a makeup artist needs and is essential both for the novice and professional. The author makes the point that the makeup in 'Gone with the Wind' was designed for a 1930s audience. The website for the author's training school (the make-up centre.co.uk) claims Oscar nominees amongst her graduates; this is the info they started with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for learning the basics, February 28, 2006
The book covers the basic principals of makeup, both staight and character makeup. I especially liked the activities (hands-on practice) that accompanied the chapters. These were things that were not touched on in cosmetology school. The book also contains student profiles, examples of their work and how they got started. The book is a good reference for anyone beginning a career, but would probably be to general for an accomplished, working artist.
