Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Most women take at least one drug during pregnancy, and this thoroughly researched guide can help prevent everything from miscarriages to birth defects. Written by a doctor who is an expert in maternal-fetal medicine and a health journalist who took medication during her pregnancy, this guide doesn’t say “don’t take anything,” but it does advise caution. Weiner and Rope explain that the FDA gives drugs ratings of A (the safest and most studied), B, C, D, or X (potentially the riskiest for the fetus), and that fewer than 1 percent of medications sold in the U.S. get an A for being considered extremely safe during pregnancy. The only drawback is that the book is organized alphabetically by the medications’ official names, not by brand names, and it does not include an index. Still, the guide is invaluable, explaining the names each medication is sold under, what it’s used for, how it works, reasons not to take it, potential drug interactions, possible side effects, and how it can affect pregnant women and their babies, including during breastfeeding. A lifesaver. --Karen Springen

Review

"Some drugs are harmless to fetuses and babies, but others can wreak havoc. That's why pregnant and breastfeeding moms will gain insight - and great peace of mind - from the careful research and clear guidance Dr. Weiner offers in this superb book."  --Harvey Karp, M.D., New York Times bestselling author of The Happiest Baby on the Block and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, USC School of Medicine

“In this much-needed and comprehensive directory, physician Weiner and health reporter Rope give expectant mothers and their health care providers a solid tool for knowing if, when, which, and how much medication is safe during pregnancy and while nursing . . . this should be the go-to reference in all libraries for medication use during pregnancy. A critical purchase.” –Library Journal, starred review

“This comprehensive resource will help empower pregnant and breastfeeding women facing medication decisions, allowing them to make informed choices.” –Publishers Weekly

As an academic, I always want to know all I can about the topic I am researching. Yet, as a mom and as a woman with a busy life, and who has also endured many pregnancy dramas, I also don't have the time or desire to get online and wade through copious amounts of often dubious "research" on medical issues related to pregnancy; I just want reliable information that is easily accessible and tells me what I need to know (or what can not be known). I also want to steer clear of being needlessly alarmed or made more confused about the information I'm encountering.

When it comes to existing research on medications taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding, I've noticed that even OBs are often in the dark about how a given medication might affect a pregnancy/baby, and are thus ill-equipped to advise their patients. This is a book that will surely be a long-awaited resource for patients and medical professionals alike. The high quality of research that went into it is obviously it's most important attribute, but I also appreciate the way it's organized, and it's to-the-point approach. Each entry is broken down into simple parts, without sacrificing complexity (i.e. how it can affect pregnant women, a developing fetus, breast-feeding, and--my favorite--"bottom line").

Moreover, I find the book helpful outside of the context of pregnancy and breastfeeding. For instance, I found a detailed entry on a medication I'd taken several years ago for back pain. The entry was so much more comprehensive than the two-line description provided to me by the administering doctor! Had I had this book to consult at that point, I would have avoided the drug altogether, and dodged the many awful side effects that came with it.

This book is what my pediatrician uses to look up drugs. I was happy it was on Kindle, with the idea that I could just search instead of flipping through a paper copy. Unfortunately, it has NOT BEEN INDEXED. Terrible.

So, while I am happy that the content is available to pregnant and breastfeeding women (5 stars), I am totally at a loss about the release of a Kindle version with this little functionality (1 star). Get the hard copy!

I wish this book had been available when I went through my pregnancies. In both cases, as a woman who wants to know why I need to take medications and how they might affect me and my baby, I found it difficult to get straightforward answers about the pros and cons. I did a lot of research online at the time that was confusing and a little scary. Having now read in this book about the medications I was prescribed, I feel a big sense of relief that, in fact, they were safe and good choices. As with this purchase, I will now be buying this book for all my pregnant friends.

This is a much needed book. Now women can relay on the latest information when researching what prescriptions to take or not to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
