More About the Author

Tim McCreight is a designer, teacher, author, and goldsmith. He received a degree in fine arts from The College of Wooster and an MFA in jewelry and silversmithing from Bowling Green State University. He taught fulltime for 25 years, first at the Worcester Center for Crafts and then at Maine College of Art. Along the way he has taught hundreds of workshops throughout the US and in Canada, Japan, Mexico, and the UK.

After writing two books for large commercial publishers, he decided to take on the challenges of illustration and layout, joining a new generation of authors who took control of all aspects of their books. In this way he has overseen all details of many of his books, most notably Complete Metalsmith, which is recognized as a standard text in the field. His books have been translated into Russian, Japanese, and Italian.

McCreight's books are characterized by a practical approach and commonsense descriptions that empower beginning artists while confirming information for advanced readers. His curiosity and the obvious pleasure he takes in sharing information makes his books not just readable but fun. Most of his books deal with metalsmithing but he has extended into design and into the genre of creative nonfiction with his very popular Syntax of Objects, re-released in a new edition in 2010. In his efforts to explore new approaches, he has also created an App for iPhone, iPod, and iPad called "Metalsmith Suite," available through the iTunes store.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for any Metalsmith, September 8, 1997
By
This review is from: The Complete Metalsmith: An Illustrated Handbook (Spiral-bound)
If you can only afford one metalsmithing book this is the one to get! This is the best introduction to metalsmithing book I have ever found. It is chock full of information to help one get started working with metal. This book is divided into 8 major sections including; materials, surfaces, shaping, joining, casting, stones, mechanisms, and tools. It also includes a handy reference section that I use nearly every time I'm in the shop. The book is full of illustrations, Mr. McCreight is pleasing concise with text. The book seems to have the budget metalsmith in mind offering many low cost methods and tools. The book even includes plans for two home built Jewelry benches, one inexpensive pine and the other a nicer hardwood. I made the inexpensive one 6 or seven years ago while I was in college and still use it today! The book is also thoughtfully bound with a metal spiral wire binding. This allows the book to lie flat on you table while you work. Hats off to Mr. McCreight. Order this one Today

5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward, December 7, 1999
This review is from: The Complete Metalsmith: An Illustrated Handbook (Spiral-bound)
Unlike many art books, this book is very straightforward and cuts out all the BS I have found to be in many Art books....It is the book used in the Jewelry Class here at Western Michigan U. All the examples are well illustrated, and the explanations are excellent. It covers everything from materials to tools and techniques ranging from elementary to advanced. Anyone who wants to get in to Jewelry Metalsmithing should get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent spiral bound reference guide., April 22, 1999
This review is from: The Complete Metalsmith: An Illustrated Handbook (Spiral-bound)
I keep this book closeby at all times. Lots of technical data and useful charts. If you work with Jewelry or just create Works of Art out of various metals, this book will help out. Contains just about everything from Agate to Zinc. Nice softcover book too.
