This review is from: Complete Mike Grells Jon Sable, Freelance Volume 5 (v. 5) (Paperback)
This collection holds some of the best of the JSF series. It was one of those series that just kept getting better and better.
Grell let his characters slowly evolve over time, and each issue showed new growth. Unlike many comic book heroes, Sable bled and took time to recover from wounds. The end of collection 4 spent 2 issues dealing with a cop shooting Sable, and the slow road to recovery. This collection picks up from there and we see a new love blooming with Myke Blackmon and Sable, as he heals in more ways than once. We then see him take off after the Soviet killer Sparrow, who is in Israel making terrorist connections. Even though it was first published over 20 years ago, Grell was a master storyteller who wove current events into his tales. No capes and flying super beings here. Just blood and guts action, drama and thrills. These collections are great reproductions that make the art really glow. I've treasure the single issues since they first came out, and am thrilled to now have book shelf volumes to proudly display. There has never been a comic series like this, and probably will never be one (unless I can find the artist to draw the one I've been itching to do for years). Get them all. They are well worth it. And Amazon's prices are perfect.
