Book Description

Monday Night Raw is the most dominant wrestling program in the world with no other program coming close to its success. This was not always the case though. Back in the mid-1990s, a new wrestling show rose up and pushed the WWF to its breaking point. WCW's Monday Nitro was an amazing show with great action, amazing stories and more attempts to bring down the WWF than anyone ever before or since.

In this book, we take a look at the early years of Nitro, starting in 1995 and going through 1996, taking us through the beginning of the NWO Era and the biggest storyline in wrestling history. Each show is broken down segment by segment and match by match with historical context, ratings and analysis of why each individual segment added up to make a great or at times horrible show.

My expectations for this book were high when I first purchased it, but I did so when purchasing Mr. Hall's Starrcade review at the same time. I read Starrcade first and was some what disappointed in the fact that Mr. Hall was not familiar with the product and the wrestlers from the early to mid-80's, so therefore my expectations of this book were lowered before I opened it.

I was happily surprised by the fact that he was much more familiar with the product this time around, but it was kind of dry and even the inserted opinions failed to entertain on the level of what I read in the RAW Files. With that said, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the early years of Monday Nitro prior to the formation of the NWO.

I remember watching WCW Monday Nitro during this time, and maybe because consistent main event matches on weekly TV was something new, I rather enjoyed the program (especially compared to RAW before DX and Austin). I do agree with the point that looking back you could see it was a Hogan ego trip, the same way you can now look back at JCP from the mid-80's and say the same thing about Big Dust.

This is not something that you can sit down and read straight through, but in short spurts, reading in an episodic way, it can be maintain your interest level.
