About the Author

Michael Hutt studied for a BA in South Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London from 1976 to 1980, and then for a Ph.D. in Nepali, which was awarded in 1984. Since 1990 he has taught Nepali and Himalayan Studies at SOAS and has published a range of books and articles on Nepali language, literature, art and architecture, politics and history. His most recent work deals with the problem faced by Nepali-speaking Bhutanese refugees.

Abhi Subedi has an M.A. in literature and Ph.D. in literary theory. He did postgraduate language studies at Edinburgh University. He is a professor of English at Kirtipur, Tribhuvan University. He is a Nepali writer, critic, poet and playwright and has had over a dozen books published.

I had a difficult time finding a Nepali language course that includes Cds. The advantages of hearing a native speaker to model are immeasurable. I was so pleased when this was just released and enthusiastically snapped it up.

Ugg - what a waste of money! I have used many other language book/tape or book/cd courses over the years (Mandarin,French, Spanish, Farsi, Italian) and this was the worst.

1)The sound is so muddy you cannot understand what the female speaker is saying.

2)There are whole chapters that just have one or two words on the CDs.

3)The course is not laid out in any kind of logical order for learning unless you have many, many months or even a year.

4)The book does not correspond well with the CD

5)The course is terribly overpriced - but even for half the price it is not worth it!

6)I'm sorry but I cannot say anything good about this product.

Overall a good text, but for beginners a little tweaking would make it even better. Newcomers to the Devanagari script would recognize the letters faster if they were in a larger typesize. Also, chapters could be organized a bit better so readers can easily flip to most useful sections. Placing basic greetings in the front, along with brief explanation of formal and informal polite address would be great.
