4.0 out of 5 stars Decent Reference for Step Sparring, February 1, 2007
By
Thomas O. Morrison (Ogdensburg, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a big fan of Master Hee-il Cho's reference material. This book covers one and three step sparring and has some additional material such as philosphy, rationale behind step sparring and a section on defences against sticks, knives, guns, and bats.

The step sparring material is quite good. As a TKD color belt on my way to 1st dan, I probably learned 80% of these techniques, making this a nice reference now as an instructor. Some of the other techniques are good and there's a nice balance between "practical" and "demonstration type flashy" ones (although not clearly delineated, a good instructor should know). Most of the three step techniques are the same ones from the one steps, which makes for a bit of wasted space... I would have preferred more techniques. Regardless, especially at this low price, this is a great reference for step sparring for students and instructors.

The self defence material in the back is a mix of good and bad and may make for good fodder for demonstrations along with a few new techniques that are good (more practical). Some of the flashy technqiues I wouldn't advise against weapons, but there are some good things (like moving offline, controlling the hand, and so on that he does). Makes for a nice read though.

Overall good reference book for step sparring!

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT BOOK !, September 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Complete One & Three Step Sparring (Paperback)
This is a great book to own! It gives a thorough description of one and three step sparring, the pre-arranged attacking and defensive movements utilizing kicks, punches, and blocks. As a considerably new martial artist, I find this book very easy to follow. The book gives all the little details that are so easily missed in class.
