Wonderful music played on just the right organ by an organist who understands and loves this music. I cannot imagine a production being
better than this one. My review is short simply because what approaches genuine perfection needs to be enjoyed and appreciated. Buy this by all means. You will be pleased in every way.

Jehan Titelouze, organist at Rouen cathedral from 1588 to 1633, is commonly regarded as the founder of the French organ school. He published two splendid collections of organ music, the first being `Hymnes de l'église', and the second consisting of Magnificat settings in the eight church tones. Until now the composer had not been especially well served on CD, although more recently there have been two recordings of the Hymns collection, by Yves-G. Préfontaine and Markus Goecke. However, the present set changes all that because now, for the first time, Robert Bates brings us the complete extant music of Titelouze, consisting of the twelve hymn settings and eight Magnificats, on three discs, played on the early baroque organ of the church of Saint-Michel in Bolbec, Normandy.

The twelve hymn settings each consist of 4-voice variations on Gregorian hymns, in three or four verses. In each case the first verse is based upon a statement of the hymn melody in long notes overlaid by polyphonic treatments of varying complexity; the last verse, typically fugal in character, is generally the most complex, with brilliant and highly developed counterpoint. The Magnificat settings each consist of seven verses - originally intended to be played `alternatim', with a voice or choir singing the words of each verse between the organ pieces, but not so performed for this recording. Each setting begins with a powerful opening statement in the appropriate church mode; the `Deposuit potentes' sections - of which the composer supplied two for each work, for reasons explained in the booklet - are particularly arresting and inventive, and the `Gloria Patri' verse provides a strong conclusion to each setting.

Some of the most beautiful music i ever heard. I buy alot of early music cds and i usually dont leave reviews but these recordings are truly special. The sound and tempo are perfect. The phrasing is like breathing. It sounds not of this world.
