About the Author
Ruth Plumly Thompson added another 19 books to the litany of Oz books, beginning in 1921 and writing another every year until 1939. She wrote about other subjects, as well, but ended her literary career with 2 more books considered outside the 40 in the Canon of Oz. Her Oz varied slightly from that of Baum, but her creations are considered just as lively and imaginative. Her contributions to this volume are "The Royal Book of Oz", "Kabumpo in Oz", "The Wishing Horse of Oz", "Captain Salt in Oz", Handy Mandy in Oz", "The Silver Princess in Oz" and "Ozoplaning with the Wizard of Oz". Jack Snow was a precocious 12 year-old at the time of Baum's death, but nonetheless offered to take over the reins of writing about Oz and its characters. Although politely turned down in his youth by Baum's publishers, Reilly & Lee, he eventually contributed 2 books to the series, "The Mimics in Oz" and "The Shaggy Man of Oz".

After reading the original Oz book to my grandchildren, I can tell you that in spite of their age and style, these great old stories still captivate children.
My only reservation to these volumes is that in order to cram so much of the original material into only three books, the publisher has employed a very dense format and a relatively small typeface. If a child will be doing the reading, this should not be a problem, as it might be for a myopic older adult, such as myself, reading to the children.
