A Masterpiece,

How you respond to this CD will depend partly on where you fall on what I sometimes call the "Stones vs. Beatles" continuum. If you like your music clean and neat, this may just sound like second-rate stuff -- Lewis is sometimes in rather rugged vocal shape, and occasionally sounds like he might be under the influence of various substances.
If it's raw passion you want, though, this captures the middle-aged Lewis in amazing form, a modern Pan full of arrogance and regret. It's also got some great rare gems, including a version of "Over the Rainbow" and the old chestnut "Picture From Life's Other Side." The spirit is perhaps best summed up by his recitation at the end of "No Headstone on My Grave:" "I don't want no headstone on my grave... I want a f***ing monument!" Plus, it's 42 tracks and James Burton on guitar. What's not to like? When I originally reviewed this album it was a 10 buck special, and I now see that used copies are going for over $100. Hopefully someone will re-issue it.

Raw, Rough and Real! Jerry Lee Unbridled!,
By
This review is from: Complete Palomino Club Recordings (Audio CD)
Is there anything new that can be said about Jerry Lee Lewis?Probably not. His has been a life and career built upon excesses that no fiction writer would attempt to portray. He has both abused and redeemed himself so many times over that it tends to boggle ones mind. That he has lived this long is at least a minor miracle! And through it all he has done it his way. (Much more so than Sinatra who usurped the term.) The drama of his life has the unfortunate tendency of overshadowing the music he has made. At his best he is real, soulful and artistic. He can grab your emotions as few others. His music, not unlike the best of Ray Charles, can drain the listener and literally stand you up off your seat. Like Charles, you know at once that his songs come from the the inside out. They are from personal experience not a songwriters pen. These are not studio recordings, but live unexpurgated performances. Better than a studio! Not as technically superior perhaps but alive with feeling and emotion. It's time to put aside the titillating aspects of the "Killers" life and simply recognize him for what he is. Simply the best Honky-Tonk artist ever!

Honky Tonkin' Killer Tearing It Up!!!,

This cd is a recording, 4 albums worth (previously released on 3 separate albums w/10 extra cuts to boot!) of "The Greatest Entertainer In The World" Jerry Lee Lewis Live at the Palomino Honky Tonk. The Killer shines in this friendly beer swillin' environment and his music rises to the occasion. This is great honky tonkin' piana playin' by one of Rock's legendary performers. And the back up band consisting of James Burton of 'gitar and Kenny Lovelace on fiddle ain't to shabby 'neither! A great album and value - pure Americana.

Best sound recording of any live recording of JLL. James Burton on backing guitar. This recording is the Killer at his best in my opinion. My music interests are varied and wide, this is my favorite record of all time.

What an album. The band alone is almost worth the price of the album. Jerry lee plays piano licks I've never even heard him play before. The variety is jaw-dropping. Quit wasting your time reading this review, and go buy this album. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," has a an indefinable beauty that happens maybe once in a career;Listen to Burtons' solo!! True "Lightning In A Bottle." My God, what a brilliant artist, excuse me, I need to go start it over again for the fifth time today.

This double CD captures over 40 tracks of Lewis's live performances. Though drunk through most of it, he still makes it sound great.
