This review is from: Complete Peel Sessions (Audio CD)
If you are coming at this CD release as a novice, then fine, don't let me put you off because it contains a lot of great music. It does however span a diverse set of songs from a band that evolved quickly and irrevocably towards more establishment indie sounds. The early sessions from 1991 are more experimental in nature than later tracks such as "Spiders and Flies" but there is still some melodic harvest there with radio friendly songs like "Frittering". The later sessions have the gems "Funny Bird" and Tonight it Shows" from Deserter Songs segued together for convenience rather than fluency or compatability. Unfortunately for fans of that seminal album there is no "Holes" or "Goddess on a Highway", a pity really. On that subject and as an aside, if you can track down a live version of "Holes" that appeared on a "Uncut" Magazine disc back in 2002 and which was lifted from a live performance on the Jools Holland show, then the version is a classic reading.
For fans of Mercury Rev and of leftfield indie generally, this release is highly recommended. |
