Editorial Reviews

Groundbreaking and enormously popular, Peter Gunn marked the moment in television where modern popular music began to be used as an integral part of the audience experience. The cool, suave title character was perfectly reflected in the urbane jazz written for the show by Henry Mancini. Mancini is, of course, one of the greatest ever composers for TV and film, winning several Oscars and becoming part of the cultural fabric of the 20th century. His music for Peter Gunn is collected here, including the familiar 'Peter Gunn Theme' alongside all the other tracks used during the series. Duane Eddy's celebrated version of the theme is also included, along with other alternative recordings of this iconic piece. In all, 49 tracks of modern but eminently listenable jazz that can take the listener back to the late 1950s when Mancini was discovering how far his talent could take him and his audience, while providing a brand new sonic experience that sounds as relevant today as when first released

If you're like me, you fell in love with the original music conducted by Mancini with all it's nuance - the specific solos and particular orchestration - THIS IS NOT THAT SOUNDTRACK and you will be disappointed. Since no musicians are credited here, I'm not sure what this is. The scores were closely followed, but solos are different, and some selections are played faster than the original cuts. Generally, the same instruments were used, but this is some kind of remake. The sound quality varies from one track to another. The trumpet sections on some cuts are almost unlistenable they are so shrill. Get the originals, not this thing.

What you have here is two different "Peter Gunn" soundtracks. Whether they were two mixes of the same recording, I don't know, but the instruments are in different places in the stereo mix and some instruments are absent altogether. The reason why you'd want both will be apparent when you listen to disc 2, which has the alternative mix of "Peter Gunn." You'll be able to hear, unlike the first track, George Roberts (the Bass Trombonist) in all his glory. He's growling and barking out low notes at the beginning of the song and I love it. However, while I like Disc 2 for the title track, I like "Dreamsville" on the first disc because you can hear George better in that mix. I think the inclusion of covers of "Peter Gunn" by others is superfluous. If you love the soundtrack, by all means, buy this collection, but if you're not that picky, then buy the original or the alternate version, or, barring that, pick and choose the mixes you like best to make your your "best of" Gunn from this collection.

Anyone who enjoyed the orginal version of the landmark soundtrack will be delighted when they hear this expanded version. What makes a Mancini soundtrack likable, especially this one, is that it's good music apart from the visual. That isn't often the case with soundtracks. (We usually buy them because we liked the film.) We're not getting "Birth Of the Cool" or "Milestones," but jazz that's highly listenable yet written and improvised so not to overwhelm the drama. It's moody and arty but subtle and with taste; like Ellington's score for "Anatomy Of A Murder." Quite an accomplishment and as we know, it set the bar for future TV music. Pete Condoli told me many years ago that he enjoyed the work on Peter Gunn which meant that the musicians considered it more than a play and deposit the paycheck gig.

The liner notes are in error regarding disc 1. Tracks 1-12 are from Music From Peter Gunn, and tracks 13-24 are from More Music From Peter Gunn, the order being the same as on the original LP's. The notes regarding disc 2 I have to take at face value, as I do not have those LP's: Tracks 1-10 from Peter Gunn by Ted Nash and Maxwell Davis, tracks 11-21 from More Peter Gunn by Pete Candoli and tracks 22-25 are variations of the title theme by Duane Eddy, King Curtis, Mundell Lowe and Buddy Morrow.

I wouldn't call this "complete", as the 2nd disc could have been the Mancini soundtrack to the 1967 Gunn film instead.

The first disc is the perfect rendition of the original LP I had as a teenager. Been trying to find it for years. Only reason for only 4 stars Is second disc in one I've heard before which in my opinion corrupts the beauty of the first disc's renditions which were sacred to me. They are not terrible, just take away from my memories...personal, I guess.

This two disc set is a reminder of how great Mancini was. His score for this ground breaking TV show is one of the best charts for big band jazz ever, on a par with Neal Hefty. Disc One contains the original soundtrack recordings. I was suspicious at first because these are in stereo, but I did some research and found there was a stereo release in 1959. The original release was in 1956 and was in mono. Apparently the master tapes were in stereo, but stereo had not yet been introduced to the public.

Disc Two is a later recording done by other musicians but using the original arrangements. The solos are similar but not copies. Unfortunately there is not a personnel list on either. Disc One had some of the greatest Southern California players, that's for sure. The personnel list on Disc Two is probably different but excellent. Disc Two also has four alternative versions of the main theme by Duane Eddy, King Curits, Mundell Low, and Buddy Morrow.

If you like melodic, harmonic, swinging jazz, all done in good taste, this is for you. Note: the discs come from the U.K. and the cover art are does not match the original.

Outstanding music by the master. However, this CD's production leaves a bit to be desired. Because there is slightly more than 80 minutes of music involved, the pauses in between each song are practically nonexistent. One would be better off buying the "Music from Peter Gunn" and "More Music from Peter Gunn" CDs separately. The music remains the same... the presentation is much more esthetically pleasing. I say that as a life-long fan of Mancini's music. "Peter Gunn" was one of the first vinyl albums I bought as a teenage back in the early 60s.
