5.0 out of 5 stars This is an amazing book January 9, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just received this book yesterday. It is amazing. Beautiful, clear photographs. Easy to understand explanations. Lots of inspiration. I am currently working my first motif project. I already used the tip on a better way to fasten off motifs. This is also my first major project with seams. The book shows a number of techniques with clear pictures and instructions. Some other helpful techniques include button holes and zippers.

I consider myself an intermediate crocheter. This book provides new inspiration to challenge myself to explore more intricate projects and different types of crochet. The book is a comprehensive guide to so many types of crochet, including various lace techniques and freeform crochet.

Depending on the person, this many not be the book for an absolute new beginner. While there are instructions for the basics, the rest may be overwhelming. I suggest you first try your hand at a little crocher, then jump into this book for inspiration.

Note: While the book has instructions for a number of completed projects as examples, its main focus is techniques. It's up to you to apply the techniques to your designs. This is not something I've done in the past, but it's where I want to challenge myself to go.

For the price, this book is an absolutely incredible value. I expect to use this book as a reference for a long time to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Crochet reference book February 16, 2010
Format:Paperback
I am an avid crocheter and am always checking out patterns and crochet books. This is the most comprehensive crochet book I have found. It contains hundreds of stitch patterns at all skill levels. These can be used to create your own designs. I would highly recommend this book for any skill level.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book! August 12, 2011
Format:Paperback
I am a complete crochet beginner and pretty much self-taught at everything, so I am enjoying looking through this book and learning the stitches. I find it very detailed and love the close-up photos. The reason I give it 4 stars is that it lacks a couple of things that, in my opinion, would make it a great resource for a beginner like myself:

1) While the stitches indicate the skill level required to make them (a big plus), the projects don't. I wonder why. It would be nice to know in advance what level of experience you need to tackle a project.

2) The author explains a little bit about how to read crochet patterns. It would have been great for her to take an example from the book itself and go over it, explaining step by step what all the abbreviations mean. In other words, teach us how to read a pattern from start to finish. I think just one example would be good enough.

I can see experienced crocheters rolling their eyes when they read this review :-). But understand that I it is written from the point of view of a beginner. Other than that, it is indeed a great book, and I am sure I will learn a lot from it!

I also wanted to mention that I am reading "Crochet patterns for dummies" by Susan Brittain, and, while it lacks in the photo department, it is proving to be an excellent resource for clueless crocheters like myself! :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing New Color Crochet Reference Guide November 30, 2010
By A Tana
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an amazing crochet reference book, and in my opinion, it really is the Complete Photo Guide to Crochet. This book has everything you would want to know about crochet. So much information and best of all every page has an example of each crochet stitch in large format color photos with written instructions and stitch diagrams. (A note on the book states that there are over 400 color photos, and I would believe it.)

There are examples showing completed projects like afghans, motifs, shawls, clothes, etc. The colors are beautiful and up-to-date with current colors and textures. You cannot beat Amazon's price for this book having 272 pages of color examples. This book has lots of inspiration and reference for the more than beginner, intermediate and experienced crocheters as well as being a good reference book for a beginner to grow into and experiment. It's so helpful having a color photo, stitch diagram and instructions with each example.

The following is a list of the chapters to give you an idea of how much is in this book:

CROCHET BASICS:
Crochet Hooks and Other Tools
Techniques
Crochet Instructions
Details and Finishing Techniques

STITCH PATTERNS
Basic Stitches
Shell Stitches
Bobbles, Popcorns and Puffs
Ripple Stitches

Tunisian Stitches

SPECIALTY CROCHET METHODS
Tapestry Tunisian
One Piece, Top Down
Bruges Lace
Intermeshing Crochet

This would make a great gift for the crocheter in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! April 29, 2010
By Michele
Format:Paperback
I requested this book via my library's interlibrary loan & I love it! I have other stitch dictionary books but I REALLY like how the swatches of the stitches are displayed in this book. This is DEFINITELY going on my wishlist! Hopefully I'll get it for Mother's Day! :)
This book is just what it says it is, PHOTOS of the stitches. It also has the written & symbol patterns for them. Another thing that I like is that it shows a couple different ways to seam crochet. I think thats great as most newbies have no way of knowing how to do it. This displays them clearly.
This book is a must! Love it! :)
