I'm not sure why the previous reviewer gave the book three stars when her review says she liked it -- but let me say the book is a well-thought out, exhaustive book that covers SO many aspects of jewelry design. Beginners will be overjoyed, and even advanced jewelry designers like myself will learn things (for instance, silk knotting, a skill I've never learned). The book covers everything from basic stringing to cutting your own jump rings, and outlines in depth a wealth of tools -- not just "here's a pair of pliers", but all the way up to what a Flex Shaft is and what it's for.

This is a GREAT book for someone just getting started in their jewelry-making career. It will help them decide which direction to head -- stringing, wire design, metal, resin, you name it.

I spent my early years learning how to make jewelry from Tammy Powley's books and newsletters. Without her enthusiasm and dedication, I never would have continued with efforts to try to educate myself from home.

That is why I am so delighted to see this fantastic, complete and uniformly excellent guide to all aspects of jewelry design, plus the tools required, and projects which you can make to incite your creativity.

Ms. Powley also has some terrific assistance from her own husband,as well as the great Cyndi Lavin, and fab Jennifer Perkins. Because of the author's thoroughness and wonderfully clear style of teaching, I am delighted to see that readers will be able make selections as they learn and grow from every aspect of jewelry making: simple stringing, to polymer clay, to resin. Metal work and wire work are also included, as well as the basics of how to make jump rings and other creative techniques. And that is just the beginning!

This is the book you should give to your teen who is just starting to show an interest in jewelry making. It is never overwhelming because the author is so wonderfully clear in her explanations and because there are over 700 photos to assist in comprehending how to work with your chosen materials.

This is also the book you should buy for yourself as a reference guide you may wish to turn to to remind yourself how to do something correctly if you have forgotten a little detail. Trust me, that little detail will be there!

The photos are fantastic and the book is top of the line.

There is also a fine inspiration gallery at the end of the book to encourage designers and to show the variety which can be achieved once you master the style of jewelry design you have chosen to work with for the moment.

The Complete Photo Guide to Jewelry Making by Tammy Powley is a wonderful and energizing encyclopedia of jewelry making and technique. Ms. Powley is one of the most remarkable teachers we are fortunate to have! She is a treasure.

I recommend this great book for all types of jewelry makers, beginners on up.

I thoroughly enjoyed this volume and found the photos to be extremely helpful in creating jewelry designs. I have been and will continue to be grateful that someone with as much jewelry experience as Tammy Powley takes the time to research, record and compile their extensive knowledge for us to have at our fingertips.

Use the designs as springboards for your own creativity, secure in the know how that Tammy has laid out for you technically secure ways to complete and finish off designs.

Tammy Powley's new jewelry making book is perfectly titled as "The Complete Photo Guide to Jewelry Making"! It's an unbelievable resource of pretty much any technique you might want to try! As a 20+ year beader, blogger and author, I still have many jewelry making bridges to cross. Finding all of these techniques in one place is truly a gift. I can easily imagine this as a text book in craft stores, bead shops or art rooms. Tammy has made it very easy for me to believe that I can pound metal and use solder to create gorgeous, one of a kind, pieces of jewelry to wear and share. As I was turning the pages, I kept imagining myself really stepping out of my beading comfort zone because the photos were so crystal clear and easy to follow. I was recently thinking about getting involved in polymer clay jewelry making, but have felt a little intimidated by all of the terms and tools. I even bought a few packs of clay and simple tools, but couldn't really get out of the gate. I am thrilled with this super easy section in Tammy's book. In just six pages, she covers conditioning, rolling, making beads, texturing, making molds, finishing AND painting on clay. I love when jewelry making brings out the artist in me! Thanks a million Tammy for this great resource.

Great book to have when starting jewelry business! I have learned some new ways to make pieces. And some better ways to make pieces I already do.

I really like the book. It's the basics all the way to the extremely unique and advanced jewelry maker put together with a lot of pretty pictures. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to make jewelry from home because anyone could go a long way using these techniques.

This is a hefty tome and if its ultimate aim is to present a photo guide, then it succeeds. It presents different jewellery-making techniques. However, for me, the projects are not ones I would wish to make. Having said that, once the techniques are learned, you are your own boss and can design your own projects. There is an interesting tape measure cuff bracelet and the front cover design is attractive. Use this as a jumping board for your own ideas - it's excellent to learn the techniques with so many photos to guide you. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.
