Arrau was a real Master of these works, which is amply corroborated by simply listening to the recordings on this CD.
They are quadraphonic audio takes of the same performances originally marketed in Stereo format by Philips. They are best listened to by using a multi-channel home cinema system.
PLEASE NOTE: This is an audio CD, not a DVD as erroneously advertised.

It is said that Chopin's "Preludes" are real
pianistic challenge, yet the great Maestro Arrau tackles it
with gusto and finesse--bravo! Delightfully recommended.

This falls under the "Did we need this?" category. These are reasonably fine, though hardly great and rather straight-laced, readings of the Chopin Preludes. The originals were in very good sound; they've since been remastered and rereleased numerous times. The sonic differences have not been radical, because the sound was always good in the first place. It's pretty certain most people who would be interested in this have already bought it in one of its many previous incarnations, and if they haven't the bargain bins are flooded withe previous editions. I doubt many will pay $22 for this when the $1.99 version is almost as good and in fact on most sound systems will probably be close to indistinguishable.

So why redo them yet again in SACD format? Arrau's first go at the preludes, recorded in the early 1950s, is far superior musically and could really use a sonic boost, as it's been available on CD only in bootleg format, played off a turntable. You'd think that would be the one they'd rerelease and then this would truly be an event. Instead the music industry just offers more of what's already out there in great abundance and at far lower price and wonders why sales stagnate.

Verified Purchase
I received this Hybrid SACD from Amazon Marketplace today, and am confused as to why it is listed as a DVD in the product description. It is, instead, a 1973 Philips Quadraphonic master tape of Arrau in the works of Chopin and Schumann....now mastered in DSD (direct stream digital) and Hybrid Super audio CD. I thought I was getting a DVD of an Arrau performance, and am disappointed. Amazon should correct this mistake in their product. Although the performances are fine....as much of Arrau's recorded output is....the fact that I didn't receive the DVD that was described has caused me to react negatively to this release.
