I have to say, when I was in my 20'S I was dabbling in 50'S Rock and Roll and thought that was where the story began. My childhood favorite was of course The Beatles, after they broke up my exposure to The Blues was from the bands I then started listening to, Aerosmith, The Allman Brothers, The Doors, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and ZZ Top (to name a few). I saw BB King in ~1982 with opening act Bobby Blue Bland, saw Bo Diddley in ~1993 and Robert Cray in ~2004, that is about as far as I got until I tried to broaden my music knowledge and obsessed some, about what the first Rock and Roll song was. I started listening to the usual suspects, Jimmy Reed, anyone associated with Willie Dixon, Johnny Lee Hooker, also some of the country offenders, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, going as far back as Hank Williams. The school of thought was that they were rolling all their influences into Rock & Roll. Willie Dixon explained Blues are the roots with the other music, the fruits. This led me to the Big Bands and some guitarists known to be of virtuoso caliber, then eventually to Billie Holiday. About this time I was very much taken by the Martin Scorsese documentary "Presents The Blues" and was intrigued by the stories of the earliest Blues musicians, surprised that the Blues happening in the 50'S was very much a continuance of something that had been popular since the 20'S and 30'S. I did some additional research and found the beginnings of the genre had critical albeit somber beginnings. I had recently bought the Led Zeppelin BBC sessions and really liked the song "The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair", seeing the credit to John Estes, more research was in order. I set out to obtain some of the earliest recorded Blues, this is the reason I bought this 2 Part collection, along with the Blind Willie Johnson 2 disc collection, and the Charley Patton 5 disc collection. For good measure I also purchased the 2 Part, 10 disc Carter Family collection. Let me reiterate I wanted early recording collections and some of the song recordings are pretty rough sounding because of the technology in the 20'S and 30'S; however, I find the more I listen, the less I notice it, just the music comes through, the roughness may just add to the ambiance, it's an experience I'd recommend. My favorite song on this disc is Down South Blues.

His influence on Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Led Zepplin and Johnny Winter among others is evident. Anyone who listens to the blues or rock should own this record.

After listening to a few songs of this cd, I beleive it to be one of the best cd's I have heard in a long time. As far as for the history of some of our great singers and how it gave black people a change to break into music, I beleive it to be the best of all times.
