Old-time blues, April 19, 2011
This review is from: Complete Recorded Works 1 (1923-25) (Audio CD)
I've purchased this compilation with different cover art, but same company and serial number - DOCD-5399, so I guess it would be OK to put in my two cents/pennys...
Although there's quite a lot of surface noise on these recordings (particularly on first few tracks and, for instance, track No 6), which my put some purists off, fortunately, I'm not one of them - for me, surface noise of these old records is a challenge...
I haven't really listened to Sippie's work and, although she's no Bessie Smith, I must say she is not far from her level... Accompanied by solo piano (either Eddie Haywood or Clarence Willians), or small jazzy combos (featuring, among others, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, King Oliver)Sippie really delivers!
You know you're listening to 20s style blues when there's no drums or bass in any of the tracks and only banjo occasionally helps the piano deliver the rhythm.
If you like Ma Rainey or Bessie Smith, you won't go wrong with Sippie.
