incredible songs from World War I, November 23, 2011
This review is from: Complete Recordings 2 (Audio CD)
Everything Schumann-Heink sang had great personality, and at least until the early 1920s, wonderful vocalism. Here, the highlights are the recordings she made during World War I, when her sons fought on both sides. "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Onward Christians Soldiers" (the last, I think, delivered sardonically), along with a revised
"Old Folks at Home" (where the Danube is the river she longs to see)are three of the greatest recordings ever made, and the context makes them that much more poignant. Along with her early recordings (on a variety of labels)
and the 2 CD set from Stanford Archives, these are essential documents of a singer who can probably never be equaled
in her vocal category.
