Barbara Manning Shines in Debut Band!!, March 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Recordings (Audio CD)
Available for the first time on CD in wide release, the Complete Recordings of 28th Day include all the studio recordings that comprised their 1985 debut on Enigma Records (Virgin in Europe), plus live and other bonus tracks. This trio featured the intertwined vocals of soon-to-be-revered indie chanteuse Barbara Manning and guitarist Cole Marquis (later of the Downsiders and Snowmen), as well as the inventive backbeat of Michael Cloward. 28th Day were absolutely one of the best bands to come out of Northern California in the mid-Eighties and gained wide critical applause for their innovative melodic psych-rock, which featured a dense mix of open tunings and vocal harmony interplay. The band only lasted a few years and left the cognoscenti wondering what greatness they would have been capable of if they had stuck it out. This set comes packaged in a very nice digipak based on the artwork of the original LP with an 8-page full-color booklet with photos and detailed liner notes by Barbara Manning and Paisley Underground archivist Pat Thomas. This definitely gets my vote for indie reissue of 2003!!
