Editorial Reviews

These LPs are Eastward Ho! Harold Land in New York (Jazzland JLPS933), a quintet date issued under Land's name, and Fire in the West (Jubilee JLP1044), a Herb Geller date on which the two musicians are joined by the leader on alto sax.

For this remaster of Eastward Ho! I have retained my original review but added a different concluding comment about the remaster.

Eastward Ho! Harold Land in New York
Harold Land: Tenor Sax
Kenny Dorham: Trumpet
Amos Trice: Piano
Clarence Jones: Bass
Joe Peters: Drums

Another fine production effort by Orrin Keepnews who gave Harold Land his choice of trumpeter for the occasion, the fabulous Kenny Dorham. Land really knew how to make the influence of Charlie Parker come alive through his tenor, an influence doubly enriched through his own individual eloquence. Both were bluesman of the highest calibre and on O.K. Blues, the longest track on the disk at around twelve minutes and dedicated to the producer, Land lays down one of his finest solos; full of impulsive, articulate energy that finds just the right gaps to impassion a sustained single note plea. If Coltrane was all 'sheets of sound' Harold Land was a restless bubbling brook that not infrequently cascades over the edge! This 24 bit remaster has etched out more timbre from the horns and given the overall sound image more body.

Fire in the West
Herb Gellar: Alto Sax
Harold Land: Tenor Sax
Kenny Dorham: Trumpet
Lou Levy: Piano
Ray Brown: Bass
Lawrence Marable: Drums

I for one didn't know of the existence of this recording so it's come as a pleasant surprise. The horn arrangements are quaint and still sound fresh (aided and abetted by the remaster) but they won't exactly set you on fire, even though it's a solid run through of the material at hand (except I still prefer Scott Hamilton's version of Jitterbug Waltz off his Jazz Signatures).

5.0 out of 5 stars Two underecognized masters at work May 13, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Harold Land & Kenny Dorham were masters of their instruments who perhaps never received the level of recognition deserved while active. Harold Land's "The Fox" is a neglected gem, IMO while Kenny Dorham's "Una Mas", "Trompeta Tocatta" and "Whistle Stop" and his collaboration with Sonny Rollins fall into the same category, each featuring highly original compositions and solo performances. "Complete Recordings Eastward Ho/Fire In The West" make a solid case for each man's originality and impeccable taste and creates a good starting point for approaching their artistry. Original, yet highly accessible mainstream jazz of the 60s, the energy and invention never flags. They might not have been Coltrane or Clifford Brown (such musicians arrive once in a generation), yet recordings like this prove their worth over repeated listenings on their own merits. This recording deserves its place on any jazz lover's shelf.
