4.0 out of 5 stars Not only vibes, A new and open approach to bop piano, February 22, 2007
This review is from: Complete Recordings (Audio CD)
As this recording demonstrates, Eddie was also an accomplished pianist. He was experimental to the degree you might find with Lenny Tristano or the Legendary Hassan (with max Roach).
Notable is his strong left hand which pounces on the lower reaches of the keyboard with a driving walk and a be bop style much like Bud Powell or Horace Silver, but also very original. A very rhythmic and intelligent player who can also carry a standard melody, the latter album represented on this CD shows a whole lot of spontaneity and inventiveness. He goes off on some interesting nearly avant garde tangents. If you like a sense of bluesy bopy walking left hand bass patterns and firmly rhythmic chords, piano players check this out. His touch is percussive in a good way as you might expect from a vibes player . I find him more interesting on the piano with the same amount of chops as when he plays vibes. This is lost piano history. If you liked Tristano's "The New Tristano" this is probably right up your alley and has a little more light heartedness thrown into his serious improvisations.

5.0 out of 5 stars "THE PERCUSSIVE JAZZ PIANO OF EDDIE COSTA", October 1, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Complete Recordings (Audio CD)
HIS STYLE IS A PERCUSSIVE,STACCATO APPROACH TO THE PIANO,MOST OF THE TIME FROM THE MIDDLE TO
THE LOWER REGISTER WITHOUT USING THE SUSTAIN PEDAL MUCH,IF AT ALL. HE KNOWS WHERE HE'S GOING AT ALL TIMES. A TRUE PRO THROWING OUT MUSICAL SURPRISES AT YOU. (CHECK YOUTUBE.) HE'S AS QUICK AS
OSCAR PETERSON AND AS PERCUSSIVE AS TRISTANO IN THE LOWER REGISTERS. IN THE 1959 STEREO SESSION;
I REVERSED MY HEAD PHONES SO I COULD HEAR THE MUSIC AS IF I WAS SITTING ON THE PIANO BENCH.;NOTES
ROLLING FROM THE UPPER TO THE LOWER REGISTER,GOING ACROSS IN FRONT OF ME. (SO TO SPEAK.) HE'S AS
GREAT ON VIBES AS HE IS WITH THE PIANO. ONLY ONE VIBE TRACK,THOUGH. . SOME OF THE TUNES HERE ARE LISTED ABOVE THE REVIEWS. "HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHTS"& "WHAT'S TO 'YA" ARE WOW PERFORMANCES.
VINNIE BURKE/WENDELL MARSHALL/NICK STABULAS/PAUL MOTIAN, HELP EDDIE RIDE ACROSS THE JAZZ
LANDSCAPE. I ALSO RECOMMEND;"THE EDDIE COSTA QUINTET"(WOODS,FARMER ETC.) IS ANOTHER 5 STARS CD. "COMPLETE
RECORDINGS" IS OVER 78 MINUTES OF MUSICAL CREATIVITY FROM THE MIND AND FINGERS OF EDDIE COSTA!!!
