Wes at his best, March 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Complete Recordings With Lionel Hampton (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful collection of music created by Wes and Mr. Hampton. Stellar recordings give tremendous insight into what a true genius the man really was. His guitar is right upfront in the mix and the recording quality is glorious. Here Wes has never sounded better. This is fantastic music with an excellent packaging job. A must have for any Jazz guitar lover!

It's actually pretty good R&B, March 27, 2003
This review is from: Complete Recordings With Lionel Hampton (Audio CD)
In a nutshell, this isn't great, but it is really pretty good funky early R&B. Wes isn't prominant, but I can hear him doing some pretty tasty fills here and there. Frankly, I bought this because I wanted to hear what Wes sounded like in 1949. I like it pretty well, not because Wes is doing anything all that dramatic, but because the music is pretty good. If you like old R&B, or if you're nuts about Wes Montgomery and have to have all his stuff you should get this. I am glad I did.

Forget it, not even for hard core Wes fans., March 9, 2003
This review is from: Complete Recordings With Lionel Hampton (Audio CD)
Disconforme (Definitive Records) strikes out with this load of nonsense. This was a period when Hamp was recording commercial R&B records, a la Louis Jordan. Wes is barley audible on these recordings and does not play one solo. The remastered tapes sound good considering the primitive recording technology. The liner notes are awefull, however all personal and recording date information is well documented. Don't wate your money, not even hard core Wes fans will dig this.
