Muhal Richard Abrams got his start on the Chicago bop circuit playing with everyone from Dexter Gordon and Max Roach to Ruth Brown and Woody Shaw. A composer and multi-instrumentalist (clarinet, cello & piano), Abrams is best known for his work in free jazz. He was the recipient of the 2010 NEA Jazz Masters Award and the 2010 Vision Festival Lifetime Achievement Award.
