Arranged in straight alphabetical order by title, and decorated with lively pen-and-ink illustrations, the more than 700 selections in this compendium indicate a wide age range, from nursery rhymes for the very young to folk songs and other familiar American tunes. Each entry has at least one "theme connection" listed beneath it, and some have as many as four or five. Some are a stretch, but many will be helpful for librarians and teachers who do thematic programming. "Hickory, Dickory, Dock" lists mice and time of day as its theme connections, while "Looby Loo" suggests days of the week, movement, and parts of the body. This book will be of limited use to new programmers or those who have no musical knowledge or ability. Only 17 songs are accompanied by a melody, and none suggest recordings, even those with sophisticated or lesser-known selections such as "Down by the Riverside" or "Cockles and Mussels." Inexperienced programmers may also be frustrated by the lack of age guidelines. For more experienced or music-savvy programmers, this volume might very well be a repetition of what they've already garnered from other sources. Still, it may come in handy in some collections. A thematic, title, and first-line index are included.

More About the Author

Dr. Pam Schiller has an impressive career spanning nearly every facet of the early childhood profession. She was supervisor of Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten for the Pasadena (Texas) Independent School District, and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston at Clear Lake.

Dr. Schiller has authored numerous articles for early childhood journals as well as teacher resource books including The Instant Curriculum, co-authored by Joan Rossano and published Gryphon House.

Beyond her professional life, she maintains a special - and active interest in nature and the environment. Pam is the mother of two grown daughters and is a very proud grandmother-to-be!
