A good self-study material and I like the practice part. However there are issues
1) Something are stated wrong or confusing. Like it says hushers are always followed by (sorry I forgot the letters already) but 2 lines down it says hushers and gutters are followed by a another list of letters. That is very confusing
2) The text does not indicate stressed letters in the word. A lot of other books have a way either by highlighting the letter or putting a mark above it. Make sure you constantly use the CD for pronunciation.
3) Some previous reader commented on the speakers not being native. I could not tell since I never met a native russian and I'm a brand newbie. But I would definitely prefer a native russian accent.
4) The textbook could have been organized a little better (like using highlights for a new session). And it could have marked the cd track number so user can find it quickly.
5) in the CD, there is too little space left for the student to repeat. And the english after that is not really necessary. I would rather have the russian repeated twice instead of having english translation since I need to use with the book anyways.

Can't follow CD along with book. It jumps from one lesson, sentence words, nuts and bolts, and conversation to another one somewhere in the book. You think you are learning about introduction and the next track is about food . Huh?? /:( So you are looking in the book like crazy for the next subject you are listening, wasting time searching and getting frustrated because you cant find it. Crazy!!
The CD is very important to learn the sound of words, but this course doesn't make it easy at all. Russian is hard enough to get frustrated with the lessons because the cd doesn't work properly.

I've seen a couple of Russian courses before this one that I certainly wasn't too pleased about. Those were the kind of courses that only teach you specific phrases and skip pronounciation and grammar and the like. This course, in my honest opinion, is a serious course aimed at people who really want to study grammar, practice conjugating verbs, declining adjectives and all that, and who can research things independently on the internet when things get unclear. There are a couple of sources of confusion, like the spelling rule that another reviewer mentioned. I didn't understand that rule back when I was studying the pronounciation, so I ignored it. But on the other hand that didn't stop me from getting halfway through the course book by now. Minus those (very few) confusions the course would be awesome, and having completed half the book I can't find any real reasons not to recommend it.

What happened to Living Language's old policy of taking the student through sizable conversations, and THEN working through a little bit of grammar? Learning language by rote and repetition works great; it's how we learn our mother language when we're babies. Unfortunately, the New Improved Living Language series fell into the same trap almost every other DIY language methods did, which is to bore you to tears with preparatory explanation and grammar for many pages before you ever get to your first conversation.
