This review is from: Complete Savoy Masters 1944-1949 (Audio CD)
This CD, produced by Definitive Records, gathers the complete recordings, all master takes, no alternates, recorded by Lester Young for the Savoy label between 1944 and 1949. The total of 15 tracks includes four recording sessions: three with Young's own small groups and one with Count Basie's orchestra, headed by Earl Warren, the band's musical director at the time. Highlights include solos on Salute to Fats, Ghost of a Chance, Crazy Over J-Z, and These Foolish Things.
Highly recommended for both fans of Lester Young and for anyone wishing to get a taste of 1940s jazz. |
