Book Description

The forty-five sermons collected in Volume 3 were composed and first delivered between October 1830 and November 1831. During that time Emerson's first wife, Ellen Tucker Emerson, died of tuberculosis, a loss that deeply affected Emerson.

Transcribed and edited from manuscripts in Harvard's University's Houghton Library, the sermons are presented in a clear text approximating as nearly as possible the original version delivered to Emerson's congregation.  As well as the detailed chronology, explanatory footnotes, and textual endnotes found in previous volumes, this one contains a comprehensive index.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Like its predecessors volume three of Emerson's Complete Sermons is a model of accuracy and textual editing. Like them also the last third ('Textual Notes') includes Emerson's revisions, cancellations, supplements and related documents--all requiring great editorial patience. We owe a large debt to the team of scholars under the captaincy of Albert J. von Frank for ushering into print, after a century and a half in limbo, this block of important manuscripts."--American Renaissance Literary Report

More About the Author

There are few people as quoted and quotable as Ralph Waldo Emerson, founder of the transcendental movement and author of classic essays as Self-Reliance, Nature, and The American Scholar. Emerson began his career as a Unitarian minister and later put those oratory skills to move us toward a better society. More remains written on him than by him.
