5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Kindle Book at an Unbeatable Price
This book is jammed packed with all of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries; each and every story ever published, as advertised. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Kindle Book at an Unbeatable Price, March 3, 2010
This review is from: The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection (Kindle Edition)
This book is jammed packed with all of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries; each and every story ever published, as advertised. And each story is linked as well, so moving around the chapters and short stories is a breeze, unlike in many of the other Kindle versions out there. The layout is clean and neat, and there are even illustrations throughout, which some stories call for, as Holmes refers to maps and figures of dancing men, etc., and it helps to have the illustrations, which highlight and enhance the storytelling.

Great anthology! And the price is unbeatable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best and lowest cost, "Completed Sherlock Holmes collection"., May 9, 2010

This review is from: The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection (Kindle Edition)
This is a review for the Kindle version.

The table of contents, yes it is really is there, is nicer than the
over version(s) that I have previously bought.

So far I have found no formating errors.

And the use of font sizes looks better than other version(s).

Both of my 20 something year old sons and myself are enjoying
reading this together. My wife is about ready to join in too.

Nice to be reading Sherlock Holmes again.
And how are you going to beat 99 cents!

This is what Kindle is all about!

5.0 out of 5 stars Arthur Conan Doyle - the master of detective fiction, July 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection (Kindle Edition)
Sherlock Holmes has always appealed to me. I enjoy his penetrating logic and allergy to boredom. Although I loved these stories as a kid, I never fully appreciated the marvel of Arthur Conan Doyle's storytelling and prose style. The latest Sherlock Holmes movie, with Robert Downey Junior playing the master sleuth, inspired me to re-discover these stories and novels. I especially loved "Hound of the Baskervilles," a timeless "creepy" tale that combines a supernatural legend with unexplained deaths and a hidden identity. Holmes and Watson leave the comforts of their cozy flat at 221B Baker Street to explore the stark moors. The characters they meet are all fully developed and yet, hide critical evidence from view. The scary chase with a hound across the foggy moor is still a fearful experience, even though I have read the scene many times. It's hard to believe these stories were written a hundred years ago. Although set in a Victorian age of hansom cabs, mud-spattered boots and afternoon tea, the dialogue and the observations about human nature are still fresh and seem like they were written today.

But it's plagued with formatting problems when you adjust the text size. Seems to work well on the smallest setting, then it doesn't adjust as you go higher so you end up with sentences an inch long down the page.

On the upside, it has the Casebook of Sherlock Holmes which isn't in any of the free titles (yet).

As far as content, no need to elaborate on how this is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's best work.

This is a fantastic anthology of sherlock holmes stories, in their published order. I just wanted to confirm that yes, there is a full clickable table of contents in this ebook - but when you use the GO TO command, it doesn't take you to it for some reason. If you 'GO TO BEGINNING', it takes you to the first page of the first story in the collection, instead of the cover page of the book. Just press Prev Page a couple times at the so-called 'beginning' of the ebook, and you will find that the full table of contents is there. 5 stars for the stories, but I'd give it a 4 star layout rating, because the contents can only be reached in this awkward manner. However, the contents are fully clickable, you can just highlight a story with the cursor cursor, and click to take you to that story, which is a good feature.

4.0 out of 5 stars a hidden table of contents for the collection, December 19, 2010

This is very confusing.
When you first open the "collection" it starts on the cover page for "A Study In Scarlet" and it appears that there is no table of contents to the other books.

You can't find the TOC by doing a menu --> go to --> "table of contents" -- It is greyed out.
Instead do menu --> go to --> cover
That takes you to the real toc.

Five stars for the content -1 star for hiding the table of contents.

3.0 out of 5 stars Content is Great! . . . but hard to navigate :-(, March 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a new Kindle user . . . I have THIS version of the Sherlock Holmes stories, as well as the other version with the EXACT SAME NAME and COVER. I would give this version a 5 star rating if it navigated more easily!

(The OTHER version was: ASIN B0013XW2F4 for $1.99)

THIS version is much better because it contains all the illustrations by Sidney Paget! :-) However this version is also much more difficult to navigate . . . it is much harder to go to any individual story.

One of the things about the Sherlock Holmes culture is that you need to be able to quickly navigate between individual stories! Any diehard Sherlockian will verify this.

A way around this is to "highlight" any particular story's title as you find your way through this e-book. Then, you can "View my Notes and Marks", and thus find your way to any story quickly and immediately. This is a very important point.

I really love all the Sherlock Holmes stories, and I have both the "Baring-Gould" and the "Klinger" Annotated printed hardcopy books as well as many other printed books . . . so I know what I am talking about here.

The Amazon Kindle is one of the best inventions of this century!

But, a major problem seems to be in deciding WHICH e-book to buy out of any particular series with the SAME NAME AND TITLE, and which one will work the best with your Kindle. You can't tell exactly what you're getting until it's delivered to your device.

I wish Amazon would help this by providing a little more detail in their Kindle book descriptions, perhaps showing the TOC for the book, etc.

Thanks and all best,
Joe

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Elementary, My Dear Watson..., December 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
this is the best Kindle collection of Sherlock Holmes stories for the price.

It's all here, and it's easy to navigate. Yes, it does open up to the first page, and when you "Go to" from the menu, the "Table of Contents" will be hidden. (They need to fix that). However, if you "page back" a step or two, the entire "Table of Contents" will be available to you, and you can simply click on any place in the many books you'd like to read. (Except Chapter One for some reason.--but, luckily, it's Chapter One and you don't have far to go to get there.)

I've found that many of the Kindle books hide their Table of Contents. I'm still giving it five stars because, once you page back, the active menu is very easy to navigate with a simple click. Personally, I'm just thrilled I can carry around the whole Sherlock Holmes canon for $2.73.

In case I didn't make it clear, this is the ENTIRE Sherlock Holmes collection, from start to finish. You can find out how they met and how their legendary friendship progressed--all the mysteries, the novels, everything is here.

And, I should also add, if they fix this problem with the Table of Contents, you may want to get the updated version when and if it arrives.

2.0 out of 5 stars Truly Complete Text, Poor Formatting, December 21, 2010

If you wish to waste your time reading one of the great classics of detective fiction, this is a great price, and it's truly complete. I noticed very few typos, and the formatting was readable. However there were many minor gripes: 1.) Many of the illustrations were corrupted--totally unrecognizable. 2.)The table of contents is a bit of a joke, not even recognized by the Kindle as a TOC. It does make it easier to navigate, but it's painful. 3.) The footnotes are not linked--they should have either removed the numbers altogether, or linked them to the notes. 4.) Often, a strange formatting reflow problem would develop, and the lines of text would start as a new paragraph every sentence. Again, I can live with it, but I paid for this book--it should look like a book. 5.) No chapter divisions--this means if you want to skip a story, you have to use the next page button, rather than the five-way nav. Frown.

If this was a freebie, or from Gutenburg, I'd give it four stars, especially for the illustrations. But if I'm going to buy a public domain book, I'm buying it for the formatting. Look to a different e-dition to find top-notch formatting, please.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooray for Sherlock Holmes!, August 14, 2010
This review is from: The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection (Kindle Edition)
At first, I was a little hesitant to purchase a complete collection of Sherlock Holmes. I decided the 99 cents were okay to gamble with, so I bought it. What a great find! Not only does this book have an active table of contents to each book, but it also has sub-chapters inside each book. This makes it seem as though you are navigating inside multiple books at once. The layout is crisp and clean, with appropriate spacing. Overall, I would suggest this book to all of my friends as a great way to read from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's greatest character.
