More About the Author

My own enjoyment of little Shirley Temple began when I was a young child, watching her movies on cable television in the 1980s. I couldn't help but smile seeing the cute little girl sing and dance. I curled my hair like Shirley, took tap dancing lessons, tried to sing like her, and even copied her mannerisms. Her movies made me happy, which is what a little girl wants to be the most.

My admiration for Shirley Temple came when I was a teenager, after reading her autobiography 'Child Star' and 'Shirley Temple: American Princess' by Anne Edwards. I enjoyed watching her movies even more knowing that she grew up to become a happy and successful adult.

At that time, I became a 'fan', and began to collect Shirley Temple memorabilia. My mom and I would spend every weekend together going to antique shops and doll shows looking for any Shirley Temple item we could find. We would come home, excitedly showing my incredulous dad what we had found. I also joined the Shirley Temple Collector's Club, and began corresponding with Shirley Temple fans all over the country.

As I got older, I packed my Shirley Temple dolls away. I had more important things to think about, like boys. After all, boys were not exactly interested in Shirley Temple. Yet, I still watched my Shirley movies occasionally. No matter what my situation, I could always depend on little Shirley to put a smile on my face.

Eventually, the dolls came back out, and the boys learned that they had to like the dolls if they were going to like me. What a litmus test that was!

Every Shirley Temple fan has a personal story, a reason why Shirley is so special to them. My own is the memory of pure happiness, the instant smile that comes to my face thinking of little Shirley, the bond that my mom and I share from years of collecting together, and the lifelong friendships that I have made corresponding with others who feel the same way. Most importantly, it is the admiration and inspiration that she provides even now to be something more, the importance of public service and helping others.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book on Shirley Collectbles, July 22, 2006
This review is from: The Complete Guide to Shirley Temple Dolls and Collectibles (Identification & Values (Collector Books)) (Hardcover)
With apologies to Edward Pardella, whose book is excellent in its own right, I must say I am absolutely blown away by this volume. I sold off my collection several years ago--I only have one Shirley doll at this point. So I was not inclined to buy another book on the subject. But the amount of information presented in there is astonishing!!!! I especially liked the photos of the dolls being made (I KNEW it was a curling iron!!!), the restoration section [if only I had had that when I first started collecting--LOL!]. And the section on ST autographs, which was badly needed. Kudos to Tonya Cammeratta for what amounts to a true act of generosity.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very helpful and valuable guide for Shirley Temple collectors!, July 2, 2006

This review is from: The Complete Guide to Shirley Temple Dolls and Collectibles (Identification & Values (Collector Books)) (Hardcover)
The word "complete" is a good one word description of this book. There are many details of every Shirley Temple doll imaginable from 1930s composition, 1950s vinyl, to contemporary Danbury mint dolls. There are foreign dolls too. All the outfits are thoroughly described and beautifully pictured. You will find extremely easy and useful tips about caring for your dolls and fixing them up. There are chapters that showcase paper dolls, other paper products, children's dresses, jewelry/accessories, and many other Shirley Temple items. The book is hardback. The layout, photography and text are pleasing to the eye and well organized. Tonya is very knowledgeable and shared a lot of time, effort and thought into making this an accurate and encompassing book. It will be helpful to Shirley Temple enthusiasts and to those looking for an approximate value of items.
