4.0 out of 5 stars Hello, good buy February 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a good buy, even though the two volumes put together come in at about $34.

The fact is, there's no other way I know of to get the complete Fitzgerald short stories, and this book gives you not only them, but all of Fitzgerald's essays as well, not to mention virtually all the interesting introductions to various Fitzgerald collections that have ever been published.

And it's available only in ebook form, not in print form at all. The two volumes put together have about eight times the wordage of a Lee Child mystery novel. Fitzgerald wrote a lot of short stories.

Reading them one after another, taking the good with the bad (and in recent years the bad keep turning good in more and more critics' opinions), you get a tremendous sense of the time, and of Fitzgerald's growth and decline.

He declined in earning power as he grew in writing skill. At the end of his peak earning years he got the modern day equivalent of $50,000 from the SATURDAY EVENING POST for "Babylon Revisited," a story so downbeat the magazine almost didn't publish it at all. It was the depression, Fitzgerald was depressed, and the result was one of his greatest stories -- leading to years of financial failure.

Fascinating stuff, and as I say, at the moment there's nowhere to read all the stories in chronological order but here. Scribner's is being clever, and probably protecting its own hardcover sales and agreements, by releasing the stories complete only in ebook format. Scholars must have climbed all over these two ebooks already. Fans should do the same.
