Exhausting collection covering all their singles. Most of them excellent music and great memories. I would have done without their singing but it was part of the game and there aren't many anyway.

When I was growing up in the 60's I had never heard of The Shadows (ok, maybe just the tune Apache). Living on the California coast it was always The Ventures.
I had thought until recently that The Shadows were just the British counterpart of the Ventures. I was very surprised by how varied the sound of the Shadows is. They are not even a strictly instrumental guitar band. These 4 cds offer up alot of music. Alot. Where the Ventures seemed to hang their hat on the West Coast surfer/beach scene the Shadows draw on much more diverse sources. From the British Invasion groups such as the Beatles, Peter&Gordon, Everly Brothers, Chad&Jeremy, Movie/TV themes, wild west mythos, even borderline progressive (Bermuda Triangle). CD#1) 1959 thru 1962 24 trks, 56:48 min CD#2) 1963 thru 1965 22 trks, 57:03 min CD#3) 1965 thru 1973 20 trks, 55:03 min CD#4) 1975 1nto 1980 20 trks, 75:28 min The sound quality is exceptional, remastered. These are all the original recordings. The liner notes are extensive; track by track commentary and history. CD 1-3 have non-stop killer guitar twang tone. CD 4 has a few filler tunes, and when the Shadows do a quasi-disco version of 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' near the end of #4 you know you're getting into dangerous territory (not really a bad tune 'cept it's about as close to the border I go). Recommended.
