An interesting introduction to an interesting composer, June 11, 2008

Charles Ives was a man who defied the standard conventions of the day, and his songs serve to illustrate many of the facets that made him who he is. The man who grew up in late 19th century New England, his religious background, the patriotic pacifist (check out his version of Over There!), it all comes out in these songs. The performances are uniformly excellent, if a bit academic, but I think that "academic" is what is needed to accurately translate these compositions, which are all rather challenging to sing accurately. Highly recommended, especially for those interested in American classical music.
