Book Description

Llewellyn's Sourcebook September 8, 2002

This book is far more than a historical survey of magical techniques throughout the world. It is the most complete book of spells, ceremonies, and magic ever assembled. It is the spiritual record of humanity.

Topics in this book include magical spells and rituals from virtually every continent and every people. The spells described are for love, wealth, success, protection, and health. Also examined are the theories and history of magic, including its evolution, the gods, the elements, the Kabbalah, the astral plane, ceremonial magic, famous books of magic, and famous magicians. You will learn about talismanic magic, exorcisms, how to use the I Ching, how to interpret dreams, how to construct and interpret a horoscope, how to read Tarot cards, how to read palms, how to do numerology, and much more. Included are explicit instructions for love spells and talismans; spells for riches and money; weight-loss spells; magic for health and healing; psychic self-defense; spells for luck in gambling; and much more.

No magical library is complete without this classic text of magical history, theory, and practical technique. The author is known for her excellent books on magic. Many consider this her best. Includes over 150 rare photos and illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Every once in a while a book comes out that is so good it makes people pay attention. Migene Gonzalez-Wippler's The Complete Book of Spells, Ceremonies & Magic is one of those books. When it first appeared it received wide acclaim in the U.S. and in England. I still have my original copy.

But as frequently happens with even the best of books, it went out of print. When it became available to be republished, I enthusiastically went for it! Migene writes that her intention in writing this book was "to show the importance of the practice of magic in the development of the human psyche. I don't believe in the supernatural. I believe in nature and all things natural. Everything that happens in this world always happens through natural channels and in accordance with immutable cosmic laws." This book may well be the ultimate proof of that belief.

This is an amazing cross-cultural compendium of magic, theory, ritual, spells and lore. If you do magic, it will give you new directions and techniques that can advance and enhance what you do. If you would like to know about magic, this book presents the subject from the viewpoint of not only a scholar, but a practitioner. And for people interested in native cultures around the world, this book is also an invaluable resource.

In these pages you will learn all of the basics of magic, from meditation and astral projection to evocation of spirits. It covers methods of divination and the Kabbalah as well as folk magic spells for health, wealth, prosperity and romance.

I highly recommend this book. If you are a magician it simply must be among your collection of books. I know you will refer to is frequently. Get this book to advance your knowledge and your magic!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is what it says, but not what it seems., August 22, 1998

Be aware that this is not a grimoire! This is an excellent book for someone who is exploring the world of magick, but is not Wiccan. Even if you are unsure, this book is great, as it places no real leanings towards any one religion (Well, maybe there is a little emphasis on the Kabbalistic system). All to often, I find that most books on magick are strongly intertwined with Wicca, and it is hard to get a good broad view of magick without the religious touting. This book provides a comprehensive study of magick through history, the parts it played in different cultures, and it outlines many different practices. A great starting text!

1.0 out of 5 stars I lost all respect..., September 15, 2009
This review is from: The Complete Book of Spells, Ceremonies & Magic (Llewellyn's Sourcebook) (Paperback)
I'd feel a whole lot better about this book and its quality of research if I hadn't noticed that the author quotes Lewis Spence word for word over several paragraphs without quotes or attribution (save for briefly citing him in the definition of demonology). If you're curious, compare her writing on pages 187 and 188 to the entry on page 119 of Spence's Encyclopaedia of Occultism (find it on Googlebooks, since the work is out of print). I know Spence's work is in the common domain now, but that means only that it can be freely reprinted without getting permission from the author first. When whole sections are taken word for word, the original author still needs to be credited, whether he's long dead or not! Even one instance of such irresponsible scholarship in a work like this brings the entire text into question!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read, December 10, 1999

Not a recipe book for spells or a grand grimore, but this book is excellent for its diversity. An absolute must for beginners, and enjoyable for adepts.
