Somewhat Disappointing,
By Darthjal "Darthjal" (North America) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Complete Star Wars Collection (Audio CD)
I bought the "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band" single as a kid. It skipped. So I returned it, and they gave me a new one. That one skipped too. Years later, I found a new copy of it as a re-issue and guess what... it skipped! No lie!So when I got this CD, I fully expected (and had no reason to doubt) that I would finally, 23 years later, have a copy that didn't skip. Well... it doesn't skip. But it's also not the same music. You can find bits of the old one in here, but it's intermixed with a lot of other... stuff. There are lots of unnecessary sound effects and bits of dialog that are spoken by people who don't sound like Han Solo, Princess Leia, etc. None of that needs to be there. That part of the CD was disappointing. It wasn't clear when I picked out this CD that it had remixes rather than the original singles on it. I felt a little misled. On the bright side, though, the Empire Strikes Back material sounds a lot closer to what I remember. I'm not thrilled with the way it was remixed, but the differences are pretty minor and I can live with them. I'm just not convinced that they're an improvement. This was the first time I heard the RotJ material, and I liked it. I was also pleased by the Duel/Augie's piece, though it could have been longer. I didn't like the Cousin Jar Jar and Jedi Knight songs at all; I have yet to hear a Star Wars song with lyrics that doesn't sound childish or corny. Which is fine for a kids' album -- I still listen to "Christmas in the Stars" -- but I expected this collection to be geared towards more adult tastes. In summary, I think that whether or not you like this CD will depend on your expectations... if you aren't looking for the original singles, you'll probably enjoy it, but if you are, you might want to listen before buying. But at least it doesn't skip!

Uneven and incomplete collection,

I've been a fan of MECO's music since the time of Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk. This latest CD was a disappointment. The fidelity of the album is poor, surprising when considering the tracks were digitally rerecorded and remastered. Case in point: The Empire Strikes Back tracks. The album title is a misnomer: Not all songs are complete as is the case with The Force Theme, Finale, and Ewok Celebration. And at a total CD time of 41:33, it wasn't due to lack of disk space. As for the new tracks, Duel of the Fates/Augie's Municipal Band stands out as the more interesting. But all in all, I found this a half-baked album. Meco should consider rereleasing some of his earlier LPs on CD, such as Encounters of Every Kind and Music from Star Trek and The Black Hole. As dated as disco may be, MECO was responsible for some excellent music.

For people who liked the original Star Wars music from Meco, this newly remixed album is a MUST to have, all the songs are remixed and there are three new songs on this CD from the latest Star Wars movie: The Phantom Mencace.

Wow, what a blast from the past! This is Meco Menardo at his best with the Star Wars saga, and his additions to the musical genius of John Williams are themselves a compliment to the CD. The STAR WARS "Main Title" and associated themes is thoroughly enjoyable, with not only some original material that brings back childhood memories, but a whole new set of sounds. And--of course--no shortage on the audio special effects. The magic of Meco is his ability to send the motifs and familiar tunes through some changes and permutations of his own. No wonder this music hit the top of the charts and stayed there! The "Darth Vader/Yoda" medley is a wonderful, colorful dichotomy; the "Force Theme" (a favorite among fans) is great in the 8-beat rock format. Most of all, the new music from the PHANTOM MENACE is tremendous, particularly the "Duel of the Fates." "Cousin Jar Jar" is cute and full of laughs, without being childish--you could just picture a whole group of Gungans getting down to this funky tune. Lastly, Yamira's voice plays wonderfully on the final track, "A Jedi Knight." My only regret was there wasn't more of the original material on the CD so that a comparison could be made. But, I guess that's why Meco made the other one available. It's a wonderful production and one any collector or Meco enthusiast would want to add to their shelf.

MECO is back!,

MECO is truly back with this CD. His rendition of "Duel of the Fates" is just great and "A Jedi Knight" is also a wonderful song. But what makes this CD so special is that even if you already own his previous records, you'll get something new: All MECO hits based on Star Wars music have been remixed, sometimes improving the originals! If you like StarWars or MECO, this CD is a MUST!

Meco's funky Star Wars musical renditions have been all the rage since he first started making them back in 1977. This latest collection includes music inspired by the latest Star Wars film, The Phantom Menace.

The CD is great people. If you love Star Wars not buying this CD, or the best of meco is doing yourself an injustice. Its really cool to hear Star Wars with a beat. MY favorite song is the techno beat of "Duel of the FAtes" Puts a new perspective on things in my opinion. I loved meco's music long before I ever got involved with this project. Its a really neat CD if I say so my self! And jar jar lovers- you'll love the jar jar song.-Tommy Stanton CD cover guy.

Super Rare Meco Release From The Y2K,

This review is from: The Complete Star Wars Collection (Audio CD)
I always enjoyed Meco's disco versions of movie and television themes from the '70's and '80's as well as his original production work with the likes of Gloria Gaynor and Carol Douglas, so when I found out about this one a few years ago, I had to have it to complete my Meco collection! I know that sounds crazy, but the Meco releases were always campy and fun, and this one is no different. It took some time to find it, and it's now getting even harder to find, but the program consists of reworkings of his themes from the original "Star Wars" trilogy as well as some new tracks from and inspired by "The Phantom Menace," which was the only one that had been completed in the new "Star Wars" trilogy when this was originally released. Hopefully, in the near future, Meco will give us his versions of the music from Episodes Two and Three as well!
